WEER (88.7 FM) is an American radio station licensed to serve the community of Montauk, New York, since 2006. The station's broadcast license is held by Eastern Tower Corp. WEER normally broadcasts a soft AC format to Montauk and East Hampton, New York. On January 16, 2023, it was announced that The WNET Group would acquire WEER for $100,000, making it a sister to Long Island NPR member station WLIW-FM. History This station received its original construction permit from the Federal Communications Commission on March 21, 2002. The new station, originally owned by WPKN, Inc. was assigned the WPKM call sign by the FCC on November 26, 2004. WPKM received its license to cover from the FCC on August 30, 2006, and began simulcasting WPKN, Bridgeport, Connecticut. Montauk, New York
Montauk ( ) is a hamlet and census-designated place (CDP) in the Town of East Hampton in Suffolk County, New York, on the eastern end of the South Shore of Long Island. As of the 2020 United States census, the CDP's population was 4,318. The CDP encompasses an area that stretches approximately from Napeague, New York, to the easternmost tip of New York State at Montauk Point Light. The hamlet encompasses a small area about halfway between the two points. Nielsen Audio (formerly Arbitron) is a consumer research company in the United States that collects listener data on radio broadcasting audiences. It was founded as the American Research Bureau by Jim Seiler in 1949 and became national by merging with Los Angeles-based Coffin, Cooper, and Clay in the early 1950s. The company's initial business was the collection of broadcast television ratings. Special Temporary Authority (STA) in U.S. broadcast law is a type of broadcast license which temporarily allows a broadcast station to operate outside of its normal technical or legal parameters. In the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) station database (CDBS), broadcast STA applications have a prefix of BSTA (general), BLSTA (legal), BESTA (engineering), or BLESTA (both). STAs can also be issued for other telecommunication services under FCC regulation. Often an STA is necessary due to an unforeseen event. A station operator must exhibit why the STA is necessary and serves the public good. A common reason to apply for STA is an equipment failure. In the broadcasting industry, a dark television station or silent radio station is one that has gone off the air for an indefinite period of time. Usually unlike dead air (broadcasting only silence), a station that is dark or silent does not even transmit a carrier signal. WEEG
WEEG (90.7 FM) was a radio station serving the eastern Long Island area from May 2010 until October 2011. It broadcast on FM frequency 90.7 MHz and was under ownership of the Hamptons Community Radio Corporation. This station was operated under a construction permit with program test authority as their radio station facility was built. Hamptons Community Radio Corporation had a license to simulcast from Westhampton, New York (89.1 FM) with the assigned call sign WEEW. They also had a license to operate on 90.7 FM in East Hampton however it did not have a tower and was required to get tower access by October 2011 or lose the license for the frequency. It ceased operations at 8 a.m. on October 1, 2011. To operate on the 90.7 frequency it would have shared it with WEGB.
