WEBS (AM)
WEBS (1030 AM and FM translator W278CD 103.5 FM) is an American commercial radio station licensed to serve the community of Calhoun, Georgia; the station serves the Gordon County, Georgia area. While Radio WEBS, Inc. remains a corporate entity, the radio station ceased broadcast services at 6:00 pm DST on Sunday, August 18, 2019, due to a bank foreclosure. The station properties and equipment were sold at auction on September 3, 2019. History WEBS-AM began broadcasting on November 1, 1966 at 1110 kHz. It was begun by the Stocks family—William, Emma Jo, Bruce and Sandy—from whose names the station's call sign originated. In 1980, WEBS was purchased by Kenyon D. Payne, formerly of Rome. Ken grew up with a microphone in his hand because his father, Mather Payne, was owner and operator of WRGA. Calhoun, Georgia
Calhoun is a city in Gordon County, Georgia, United States. As of the 2020 census, the city had a population of 16,949. Calhoun is the county seat of Gordon County. History In December 1827, Georgia had already claimed the Cherokee lands that became Gordon County and other counties. A small town called "Dawsonville" was created and founded in Gordon County, named for the owner of an early general store. Dawsonville was later renamed "Calhoun" to honor U.S. Senator John C. Calhoun, following his death in 1850. Gordon County's inferior court called an election for the selection of the county seat, offering voters a choice between a site on the Western & Atlantic Railroad (near Adairsville) or a site more centrally located within the county. The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets is the name used for all of the intercollegiate athletic teams that represent the Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech), located in Atlanta, Atlanta, Georgia. W233BF (94.5 FM) is a radio station in metro Atlanta, now licensed to serve Atlanta owned by Edgewater Broadcasting. After a series of moves (previously serving the eastern exurb of Social Circle), the station now transmits from the WUPA tower east of downtown, just north of Interstate 20. The station broadcasts an urban contemporary music format, with a heavy emphasis on local artists, and is less mainstream than other similar stations in the format such as WHTA and WVEE. W233BF is owned by Edgewater Broadcasting, though operated by Core Communications. Originally applied-for in 2003, the station went on the air in July 2007, and immediately requested permission to move to 105.3, becoming W287BI. WIPK (94.5 FM) is an American radio station licensed to serve the community of Calhoun, Georgia. The station's broadcast license is held C. Steve Hegwood, through licensee Core Communicators North LLC. Coverage area WIPK transmits from east-southeast of the city, on the ridge east of Interstate 75. Completing its application, construction permit, and application for broadcast license all within 2011, the station serves several counties in northwest Georgia, including all of Gordon county and parts of surrounding ones. The usable signal usually reaches as far south and southeast as the north and northwestern exurbs of metro Atlanta. AM broadcasting is radio broadcasting using amplitude modulation (AM) transmissions. It was the first method developed for making audio radio transmissions, and is still used worldwide, primarily for medium wave (also known as "AM band") transmissions, but also on the longwave and shortwave radio bands. The earliest experimental AM transmissions began in the early 1900s. Westwood One is an American radio network owned by Cumulus Media. The company syndicates talk, music, and sports programming. The company takes its name from an earlier network also named Westwood One, a company founded in 1978. The company was, at various times, managed by CBS Radio, the radio arm of CBS Corporation and Viacom. It was later purchased by the private equity firm The Gores Group before merging with Dial Global in 2011. In December 2013, Dial Global was, in turn, acquired by Cumulus Media.
