WEA Film Study Group
The WEA Sydney Film Society is a nonprofit film society based in Sydney, Australia. It is a club of WEA Sydney, which is part of the Workers' Educational Association . History It was established as ''WEA Film Study Group'' in 1961. The society had its first meeting on 23 February 1961. Ken Quinnell was present at the first meeting. The first president was Ian Klava, Pat Roos was the first secretary. Sid Gore was on the first committee. As well as being a founder of the WEA Film Study Group, Ian Klava had memberships of a number of film societies including Sydney University Film Group, Sydney Film Society, the All Nations Club Film Group, the Sydney Cinema Society, and the Catholic Film Society. He also worked for the Department of Information film Unit and was Director of Sydney Film Festival from 1962 to 1965. Bathurst Street, Sydney
Bathurst Street is a street in the Sydney central business district in New South Wales, Australia. Bathurst Street runs for in a west–east direction with traffic flowing in this direction only. It is situated in the southern portion of the central business district. The western terminus of Bathurst Street is at Harbour Street, Darling Harbour, with the eastern terminus at Elizabeth Street, adjacent to Hyde Park. From west to east, Bathurst Street crosses Sussex, George, Pitt, and Castlereagh streets. Bathurst Street was named by Governor Macquarie in honour of Henry Bathurst, 3rd Earl Bathurst, the UK Secretary of State for War and the Colonies between 1812 and 1827. Double-feature
The double feature is a motion picture industry phenomenon in which theatres would exhibit two films for the price of one, supplanting an earlier format in which one feature film and various short subject reels would be shown. This was related to one-act or two-act short operas that were otherwise commercially hard to stage alone. David Stratton
David James Stratton (born 10 September 1939) is an English-Australian award-winning film critic, as both a journalist and interviewer, film historian and lecturer and television personality and producer. Life and career Born in Trowbridge, Wiltshire, England, in 1939, Stratton was sent to Hampshire to see out the war years with his grandmother, an avid filmgoer, where he was taken to the local cinemas regularly and saw a diverse range of movies. He attended Chafyn Grove School from 1948 to 1953 as a boarder. He saw his first foreign film at Bath in 1955—Italian romantic comedy ''Bread, Love and Dreams''. That was soon followed by Akira Kurosawa's Japanese adventure drama classic ''Seven Samurai'' tracked down in Birmingham. At the age of 19, he founded the Melksham and District Film Society. Michael Thornhill
Michael Thornhill (29 March 1941 – 22 January 2022) was a film producer, screenwriter, and director. Career Thornhill had a background in freelance journalism and publishing including working as a film critic. He was a member of the WEA Film Study Group in the 1960s, where he met writers Ken Quinnell and Frank Moorhouse. He wrote film articles on film for the WEA Film Study Group film journal ''Film Digest'' from 1965. He and Quinnell published the film journal ''SCJ: The Sydney Cinema Journal'' from 1966 to 1968. He was the film critic for the '' Sydney Morning Herald'' and ''The Australian'' (1969 to 1973). Thornhill had an extensive career in the Australian film industry. Frank Thomas Moorhouse (21 December 1938 – 26 June 2022) was an Australian writer. He won major Australian national prizes for the short story, the novel, the essay, and for script writing. John Baxter (author)
John Baxter (born 14 December 1939 in Randwick, New South Wales, Australia) is an Australian-born writer, journalist, and film-maker. Baxter has lived in Britain and the United States as well as in his native Sydney, but has made his home in Paris since 1989, where he is married to the film-maker Marie-Dominique Montel. They have one daughter, Louise. He began writing science fiction in the early 1960s for '' New Worlds'', '' Science Fantasy'' and other British magazines.
