WDT (New York City)
WDT was a short-lived AM broadcasting station licensed to the Ship Owners Radio Service in New York City, which was issued its first license in December 1921, and deleted two years later. History WDT was first licensed on December 22, 1921, with randomly assigned call letters, to the Ship Owners Radio Service at 80 Washington Street in New York City, for operation on the standard "entertainment" wavelength of 360 meters (833 kHz). The Ship Owners Radio Service primarily sold point-to-point radio transmitters for maritime use; however, WDT, in addition to WSN in Norfolk, Virginia, and WNAY in Baltimore, Maryland, was one of three short-lived broadcasting stations started by the company. WJY was an AM radio station located in New York City, licensed to the Radio Corporation of America (RCA) from May 1923 to early 1927. It was operated jointly with RCA's primary New York City station, WJZ (now WABC). After RCA took over operation of a third New York City station, WEAF (now WFAN), WJY was discontinued as being no longer needed. Vaughn De Leath
Vaughn De Leath (September 26, 1894 – May 28, 1943) was an American female singer who gained popularity in the 1920s, earning the sobriquets "The Original Radio Girl" and the "First Lady of Radio." Although very popular in the 1920s, De Leath is obscure in modern times. De Leath was an early exponent, and often credited as inventor, of a style of vocalizing known as crooning. One of her hit songs, " Are You Lonesome Tonight?," recorded in 1927, achieved fame when it became a hit for Elvis Presley in 1960. Early life Born Leonore Vonderlieth in the town of Mount Pulaski, Illinois in 1894, her parents were George and Catherine Vonderlieth. ''Laugh, Clown, Laugh'' is a 1928 American silent drama film starring Lon Chaney and Loretta Young (her film debut). The movie was directed by Herbert Brenon and produced by Irving G. Thalberg for MGM Pictures. The film was written by Elizabeth Meehan, based on the 1923 Broadway stage production ''Laugh, Clown, Laugh,'' by David Belasco and Tom Cushing, which in turn was based on a 1919 play ''Ridi, Pagliaccio'' by . The theme song "Laugh, Clown, Laugh" was composed by Ted Fiorito (music) and Lewis and Young (lyrics). Stills exist that show Chaney in his clown make-up. The sets were designed by Cedric Gibbons.
