WCRY (AM)
WCRY (1460 AM, "Joy 1460") was a radio station broadcasting a black gospel music format. Licensed to serve Fuquay-Varina, North Carolina, United States, it broadcast to the Research Triangle metropolitan area. It first began broadcasting in 1949 under the call sign WFVG, and ceased operations in 2004. The station was owned by Willis Broadcasting. History The station went on the air in 1949 as WFVG, a 1,000-watt daytimer in Fuquay Springs owned by Wake Broadcasting Company; the call letters stood for "Watch Fuquay-Varina Grow". In 1950, S. S. Adcock sold a 60-percent interest in the station to J. M. Stephenson and W. J. Davis for $34,000; a few months later, Adcock sold his remaining interest to Stephenson and Davis for over $50,000. Fuquay-Varina ( ) is a town in southern Wake County, North Carolina, United States, lying south of Holly Springs and southwest of Garner, and north of the Harnett County town of Angier and west of the unincorporated community of Willow Springs. The population was 17,937 at the 2010 census, and estimated at 30,324 as of July 2019. The hyphenated name attests to the town's history as two separate towns. In North American broadcasting, a local marketing agreement (LMA), or local management agreement, is a contract in which one company agrees to operate a radio or television station owned by another party. In essence, it is a sort of lease or time-buy. WHPY is a radio station located in Clayton, North Carolina broadcasting on 1590 AM. It broadcasts under the handle of "Fellowship Christian Radio" and airs mainly religious programming from sunrise to sunset. It is run by Fellowship Baptist Church of Clayton and affiliated with the Fundamental Broadcasting Network. History WHPY previously aired both top 40 and country music format from the early 1970s to the mid-1990s, before it left the air briefly. WEEB (990 AM) is a radio station licensed to Southern Pines, North Carolina, United States, broadcasting a news/talk format. The station is currently owned by Pinehurst Broadcasting Corporation. History WEEB as it exists today was formed from the 1950 merger of two stations which started in the same year in the same town. The first station, WSTS, signed on at 990 kHz with 250 watts during the day, increased to 1,000 watts in December 1948. It was approved for operation by the Sandhills Broadcasting Corporation on March 27, 1947, going on the air on August 8. Just three months later, a second station went on the air in the same town.
