WCKC
WCKC (107.1 FM, "The Drive") is a radio station in Cadillac, Michigan, owned by Up North Radio, LLC. WCKC airs a classic rock format. History In 1985 Donald "Doc" Benson, then-owner of WMKC-FM/WIDG-AM in St. Ignace, obtained the CP (Construction Permit) for a new FM in Cadillac at 107.1. Cadillac previously had a WITW (now WLXV) and Doc reportedly believed he could capitalize on the "good will" of the other station's calls and came up with WYTW. It was called Y-107 and ran satellite adult contemporary music for a short period, but the station was unable to make enough money to pay its expenses. In 1989 WYTW changed to WCKC ("Cadillac KC Country") and simulcast with WMKC and WIDG. This continued until 1996, when WCKC, WMKC and WIDG were sold to Del Reynolds, WCKC became a member of the "Bear" network. (See WMKC article for more information). WMKC
WMKC (102.9 FM) is a radio station licensed to Indian River, Michigan. It airs a country music format called Big Country 102.9. The station is owned by Black Diamond Broadcast Holdings, LLC. History: A Dentist's Dream Beginnings WMKC ("MacKinaC"), owned by Mighty-Mac Broadcasting Corp., signed on in January 1982 by a Lansing dentist, Donald "Doc" Benson. Benson loved country music and wanted northern Michigan to have a WITL clone for when he traveled up north. He already owned an AM in St. Ignace, WIDG ("Widge By The (Mackinac) Bridge") 940. WIDG aired various formats, but usually was MOR. In December 1979 Doc Benson closed WIDG with a "dark" license until April 12, 1981. Cadillac, Michigan
Cadillac ( ) is a city in and county seat of Wexford County in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 10,371 at the 2020 census, which ranks it the third most-populated city in the Northern Michigan region after Traverse City and Alpena. WCDY (107.9 FM) is a radio station licensed to McBain, Michigan and serving the Cadillac area, broadcasting a Top 40 (CHR) format. The station was launched on November 6, 2010 with a temporary format of Christmas music. The permanent format debuted on December 27, 2010. Over its first 5 years, the station has grown from being an Adult Top 40 (using the slogan "Cadillac's Hits Without The Rap") to a full CHR using the slogan "Cadillac's New Number One". WLXV
WLXV (96.7 FM) is a radio station licensed to Cadillac, Michigan. The station, which began broadcasting on July 7, 1974, has previously programmed easy listening and adult contemporary music as WITW, beautiful music as WEVZ, and CHR as WWLZ ("Lakes FM"). WWLZ was changed in 1994 to a simulcast of WLXT 96.3 FM in Petoskey, which continued until MacDonald-Garber Broadcasting, believing the Cadillac area needed its own music station (as opposed to simulcasts of stations from Traverse City or elsewhere), began the "Mix" format. Mix 96.7 was programmed locally by Chris Nicholas, Program Director and Morning Show Host (the station used satellite programming from Westwood One Local's Hot AC format).
