WATZ-FM (99.3 FM, "99.3 WATZ") is a radio station broadcasting a country music format. The station is licensed to the city of Alpena. WATZ has been assigned the same call sign since it signed on in the late 1960s. The station, along with sister station WZTK, is currently owned by Midwestern Broadcasting Company. From 2006 to 2020, the station simulcasted on Rogers City-based station WRGZ at 96.7 FM. WATZ history WATZ signed-on the air in the late 1960s, as an adult contemporary station at 93.5 FM, known for several years as "Z93." In 1988, the format of WATZ-FM was changed to country and the frequency-signal moved to 99.3 so that the station could boost its power from 3,000 to 50,000 watts. For the next several years, WATZ-FM simulcasted the long-time country music format of sister station WATZ AM. Alpena, Michigan
Alpena ( ') is the only city in and county seat of Alpena County in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 10,483 at the 2010 census. After Traverse City, it is the second most populated city in the Northern Michigan region. The city is surrounded by Alpena Township, but the two are administered autonomously. It is the core city of the Alpena micropolitan statistical area, which encompasses all of Alpena County and had a total population of 28,360 at the 2010 census. WZTK
WZTK (105.7 FM) is an American radio station stunting with a Christmas music format. The station is licensed to the city of Alpena, Michigan. The station is currently owned by Midwestern Broadcasting Company. History WZTK was issued its broadcast license by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) on July 30, 2014. WZTK signed on the air at 105.7 FM on June 26, 2014. The station assumed the talk radio format and programming that formerly aired on WATZ, whose license was surrendered to the FCC on July 7, 2014. WZTK is locally owned and operated by the same company that founded WATZ in 1946. On November 18, 2022, it was announced that WZTK would drop the conservative talk format and begin stunting with Christmas music on November 24. Rogers City, Michigan
Rogers City is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 2,827 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Presque Isle County. The city is adjacent to Rogers Township, but is politically independent. Rogers City is located on Lake Huron and is home to two salmon fishing tournaments. The world's largest open-pit limestone quarry, the Port of Calcite, is located within the city limits and is one of the largest shipping ports on the Great Lakes. The freighter, , home port at Rogers City, sank in Lake Michigan on November 18, 1958. WTCM-FM
WTCM-FM 103.5 is a radio station in Traverse City, Michigan. The station carries a country music format and is owned by Midwestern Broadcasting. History In 1939, WTCM founder Les Biederman and several of his friends - engineer Bill Kiker and Drew McClay among others - decided to start a radio station in an undeveloped radio market. They chose Traverse City, Michigan as a city destined for growth which had no local radio station. They moved to the city and built the 250-watt transmitter that would be Traverse City's first radio station. WTCM initially broadcast from a small studio at the base of the tower. The WTCM control console was hand-built by Biederman and Kiker, and served the station until its replacement around 1980. When WTCM signed on in 1940, it was a local channel station at 1370 kc. briefly before moving to 1400 kc.
