WASP-79b is an extrasolar planet orbiting the star CD-30 1812. This planet is in the constellation Eridanus, and is about 810 light-years from Earth. The planet WASP-79b is named Pollera. The name was selected in the NameExoWorlds campaign by Panama, during the 100th anniversary of the IAU. A pollera is the traditional costume the woman wears in the El Punto, a Panamanian dance. Host star WASP-79, or CD-30 1812, is a F-type dwarf star located at 240 parsecs (810 light years) away from Earth. With and , it is both larger and more massive than the Sun. A pollera is a Spanish term for a big one-piece skirt used mostly in traditional festivities and folklore throughout Spanish-speaking Latin America. Polleras are made from different materials, such as cotton or wool and tend to have colorful decorations. Transit Method
Any planet is an extremely faint light source compared to its parent star. For example, a star like the Sun is about a billion times as bright as the reflected light from any of the planets orbiting it. In addition to the intrinsic difficulty of detecting such a faint light source, the light from the parent star causes a glare that washes it out. For those reasons, very few of the exoplanets reported have been observed directly, with even fewer being resolved from their host star. An exoplanet or extrasolar planet is a planet outside the Solar System. The first possible evidence of an exoplanet was noted in 1917 but was not recognized as such. TrES-4b
TrES-4b is an extrasolar planet, and one of the largest exoplanets ever found, after WASP-12b, WASP-17b, CT Chamaeleontis b (though the latter may be a brown dwarf), GQ Lupi b and HD 100546 b. It was discovered in 2006, and announced in 2007, by the Trans-Atlantic Exoplanet Survey, using the transit method. It is approximately away orbiting the star GSC 02620-00648, in the constellation Hercules. Orbit A 2008 study concluded that the GSC 06200-00648 system (among others) is a binary star system allowing even more accurate determination of stellar and planetary parameters. WASP-17b
WASP-17b is an exoplanet in the constellation Scorpius that is orbiting the star WASP-17. Its discovery was announced on 11 August 2009. It is the first planet discovered to have a retrograde orbit, meaning it orbits in a direction counter to the rotation of its host star. This discovery challenged traditional planetary formation theory. GQ Lupi B
GQ Lupi b, or GQ Lupi B, is a possible extrasolar planet, brown dwarf or sub-brown dwarf orbiting the star GQ Lupi. Its discovery was announced in April 2005.
