W2 Community Media Arts
The W2 Community Media Arts is a non-profit media arts organization in Vancouver, British Columbia located in the Downtown Eastside. The organization is developing a media arts organization in the new Woodward's building with Performance Space/Venue, Crossmedia Lab, community TV studio, FM radio station, Letterpress Studio, The Kootenay School of Writing (KSW), Interactive Media Installations, and a social enterprise, the W2 Café. Its present location is at 151 West Cordova Street, the former home of Storyeum. Once the permanent facility in the Woodward's development is completed, W2 will make its final home there. Downtown Eastside
The Downtown Eastside (DTES) is a neighbourhood in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. One of the city's oldest neighbourhoods, the DTES is the site of a complex set of social issues including disproportionately high levels of drug use, homelessness, poverty, crime, mental illness and sex work. It is also known for its strong community resilience, history of social activism, and artistic contributions. Around the beginning of the 20th century, the DTES was the political, cultural and retail centre of Vancouver. Letterpress
Letterpress printing is a technique of relief printing. Using a printing press, the process allows many copies to be produced by repeated direct impression of an inked, raised surface against sheets or a continuous roll of paper. A worker composes and locks movable type into the "bed" or "chase" of a press, inks it, and presses paper against it to transfer the ink from the type, which creates an impression on the paper. The Kootenay School Of Writing
The Kootenay School of Writing (KSW) is a Vancouver-based writers' collective. Founded in 1984 after the forced closure of David Thompson University Centre in Nelson, British Columbia KSW relocated to Vancouver to offer inexpensive courses (in writing, editing, and publishing), to sponsor colloquia and critical talks on writing, visual art, and politics, and to host a reading series with local, Canadian, and international writers, and to continue publishing Writing magazine. The first KSW brochure, published before the school had its own address, offered a variety of courses and workshops in various locations around Vancouver, as well as listing readings and talks upcoming. Storyeum
Storyeum was a short-lived tourist attraction, located at 142 Water Street, Vancouver. Storyeum was located in the largely touristy area of the Gastown neighbourhood of Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. Storyeum offered up a live, interactive, educational, re-creation of British Columbia's history through special effects, actors and actresses in a 65-minute show. Storyeum, in the wake of diminishing profits and revenue, ran its last show on October 17, 2006. The City of Vancouver continued as the property landlord and occasionally rented parts of the space for events such as Vancouver Fashion Week, the Juno Awards After Party, Vancouver Film School projects, and entertainment and cultural celebrations.
