WKHM-FM ("Jackson's Hit Music, K105.3") is a Top 40/CHR FM radio station licensed to Brooklyn, Michigan, United States, serving the Jackson area. History The WKHM callsign has a long Jackson tradition and is based on the names of the original owners of WKHM AM (Fred Knorr, Harvey Hansen, and Bill McCoy). The first WKHM-FM operated on 106.1 and is now WJXQ. The current WKHM-FM signed on in 1995 and originally programmed easy listening music, one of the last stations in Michigan to program such a format. "Easy Relaxed 105.3" played a mixture of adult contemporary hits, soft oldies, and smooth jazz. The "easy" format was dropped in early 1998 (moving to sister WIBM 1450 AM for a short time until that station went sports) and K105.3 was born. This company also owns news/talk WKHM AM 970 and hot AC WKHM-FM "K105.3". WIBM's programming is also heard on FM via translator W240DG at 95.9 MHz. History WIBM was first licensed on June 3, 1925 to Billy Maine in Chicago, Illinois as a portable broadcasting station. The call letters were sequentially assigned, had no particular meaning, and were not associated with International Business Machines (IBM). Brooklyn is a village in Jackson County in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 1,206 at the 2010 census. It is located in the Irish Hills region of southern Michigan, just north of U.S. Route 12 along M-50. The village is located within Columbia Township. The village is well known for its proximity to Michigan International Speedway, which is just south in Cambridge Township. History The village was founded by Calvin Swain, who filed the first land claim on June 16, 1832 and named his settlement Swainsville. In a town meeting vote on August 5, 1836, the community elected to change the town's name to Brooklyn. The town is named after Brooklyn, New York. A sign marking Swain's historical discovery currently stands in the town square. HD Radio (HDR) is a trademark for an in-band on-channel (IBOC) digital radio broadcast technology. It generally simulcasts an existing analog radio station in digital format with less noise and with additional text information.
