Wynne Prize
The Wynne Prize is an Australian landscape painting or figure sculpture art prize. As one of Australia's longest-running art prizes, it was established in 1897 from the bequest of Richard Wynne. Now held concurrently with the Sir John Sulman Prize and the Archibald Prize at the Art Gallery of New South Wales in Sydney. It is awarded annually for "the best landscape painting of Australian scenery in oils or watercolours or for the best example of figure sculpture by Australian artists completed during the 12 months preceding the losingdate". Sir John Sulman Prize
The Sir John Sulman Prize is one of Australia's longest-running art prizes, having been established in 1936. It is now held concurrently with the Archibald Prize, Australia's best-known art prize, and also with the Wynne Prize, at the Art Gallery of New South Wales (AGNSW), Sydney. Criteria The Sir John Sulman Prize is awarded each year for "the best subject/genre painting and/or murals/mural project executed during the two years preceding the losingdate", and as of 2008 is valued at $20,000. Will Ashton
Sir John William Ashton, OBE, ROI (20 September 1881 – 1 September 1963) was a prolific Australian Impressionist artist and director of the National Art Gallery of New South Wales from 1937 to 1943. Early life Ashton was born in Clifton, York, England, the only son of artist James Ashton, and his wife Mary Elizabeth Ashton (died 18 September 1945). His father emigrated to Australia, arriving at Adelaide, South Australia in January 1884 and founding a school of painting in "unpretentious but commodious" premises on The Parade, Norwood in 1885. His wife and son arrived at a later date, but generally given as in 1884. Ashton attended Prince Alfred College, where his father was art teacher, from 1889 to 1897. Edward Officer
Edward Cairns Officer (19 September 1871 – 7 July 1921) was an Australian artist, inaugural president of the Australian Art Association. Officer was born at Murray Downs, New South Wales, near Swan Hill, Victoria. He was the third son of Suetonius Henry Officer and his wife Mary Lillias Rigg, a daughter of the Rev. Adam Cairns. His grandfather, Sir Robert Officer, was speaker of the Tasmanian house of assembly for many years. Officer was educated at Toorak College and the National Gallery of Victoria. From there he went to Paris and studied at Julien's. He exhibited at leading exhibitions in Paris and London, and in 1903 was the winner of the Wynne prize awarded by the national gallery, Sydney. In 1912 his painting, "The Woolshed", was purchased under the Alfred Felton bequest for the national gallery, Melbourne. James White (sculptor)
James White (2 December 1861 – 14 July 1918) was an Australian sculptor, winner of the Wynne Prize in 1902. Early life White was born in Liverpool, Lancashire, England, the son of Robert White, journeyman shipwright, and his wife Janet, ''née'' Dunn. White was apprenticed to a plasterer and studied modelling at South Kensington. White made anatomical models for hospitals in London. Australian period White came to Sydney around 1884 and worked for Achille Simonetti on the monument to Governor Arthur Phillip in Sydney Botanical Gardens. White won the Wynne Prize for the group 'In Defence of the Flag' at Sydney in 1902. Despite a long list of commissions, White was by no means a distinguished sculptor. William Piguenit
William Charles Piguenit (27 August 1836 – 17 July 1914) was an Australian landscape painter. Early life Piguenit was born in Hobart, Tasmania, to Frederick Le Geyt Piguenit and Mary Ann née Igglesden. Frederick had been transported to Van Diemen's Land in 1830, with Mary Ann following him. They married in Hobart in 1833. His first artistic influences came from his mother, who set up a school for young ladies where she taught "French, music and drawing". Career In 1850 he became a draftsman with the Tasmanian Lands & Survey Department, working in particular on the Geological Survey of Tasmania. During this employment Piguenit provided lithographic illustrations for The Salmon Ponds and vicinity, New Norfolk, Tasmania. He took painting lessons from Scottish immigrant artist Frank C. George Washington Lambert
George Washington Thomas Lambert (13 September 1873 – 29 May 1930) was an Australian artist, known principally for portrait painting and as a war artist during the First World War. Early life Lambert was born in St Petersburg, Russia, the posthumous son of George Washington Lambert (1833 – 25 July 1873, in London) of Baltimore, Maryland. The younger Lambert's mother was Annie Matilda, ''née'' Firth, an Englishwoman. Mother and son soon moved to Württemberg, Germany, to be with Lambert's maternal grandfather.
