Wrestling At The 1920 Summer Olympics
At the 1920 Summer Olympics, ten wrestling events were contested, for all men. There were five weight classes in Greco-Roman wrestling and five classes in Catch as Catch Can, predecessor to freestyle wrestling. The competitions were held from Monday, August 16 to Friday, August 20, 1920 (Greco-Roman) and from Wednesday, August 25 to Friday, August 27, 1920 (freestyle). The 1920 Summer Olympics (french: Jeux olympiques d'été de 1920; nl, Olympische Zomerspelen van 1920; german: Olympische Sommerspiele 1920), officially known as the Games of the VII Olympiad (french: Jeux de la VIIe olympiade; nl, Spelen van de VIIe Olympiade; german: Spiele der VII. Eino Aukusti Leino (7 April 1891 – 30 November 1986) was a Finnish freestyle wrestler. He competed at the 1920, 1924, 1928 and 1932 Olympics and won a medal each time, including a gold in 1920. Samuel Norton Gerson (November 30, 1895 – September 30, 1972) was a Ukrainian-born American civil engineer, wrestler, and 1920 Olympic silver medalist, who helped found several Olympic and civic organizations. He immigrated to the United States when he was 11 years old. He was born in Tymky, Poltava Oblast, Russian Empire, and died in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Charles Edwin "Charley" Ackerly (January 3, 1898 – August 16, 1982) was an American wrestler who competed in the 1920 Summer Olympics. He was a 1920 graduate of Cornell University where he competed for the Cornell Big Red wrestling team under Coach Walter O'Connell. Ackerly was also a member of the Kappa Delta Rho fraternity and Sphinx Head Society. He competed for the United States in the 1920 Summer Olympics held in Antwerp, Belgium in the freestyle featherweight division, winning the gold medal. He was the only American wrestler to win gold during the 1920 Olympics, and was given a hero's welcome in his hometown of Cuba, New York following his return from Antwerp.
