World Directory Of Mathematicians
The ''World Directory of Mathematicians'' (WDM) was a directory book listing contact information of active mathematicians around the world. It was published by the International Mathematical Union every four years between 1958 and 2002, with the exception of the second edition published in 1961 and the sixth in 1979. History The idea of publishing an international directory of mathematicians was suggested by Ferdinand Rudio, one of the organizers of the first International Congress of Mathematicians held in Zürich in 1897. The first edition of the ''World Directory of Mathematicians'' was published in 1958. The work was carried out by the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research led by Komaravolu Chandrasekharan. He continued to serve as the editor for the second and third editions of the ''Directory''. The first edition of the ''Directory'' listed about 3500 active mathematicians. Ferdinand Rudio
Ferdinand Rudio (born 2 August 1856 in Wiesbaden, died 21 June 1929 in Zurich) was a German and Swiss mathematician and historian of mathematics.. Education and career Rudio's father and maternal grandfather were both public officials in the independent Duchy of Nassau, which was annexed by Prussia when Rudio was 10. He was educated at the local gymnasium and Realgymnasium in Wiesbaden, and then in 1874 began studying at ETH Zurich, then known as the Eidgenössische Polytechnikum Zürich. His initial courses in Zurich were in civil engineering, but in his second year (under the influence of Karl Geiser) he switched to mathematics and physics. Finishing at Zurich in 1877, he went on to graduate studies at the University of Berlin from 1877 to 1880, earning his Ph.D. under the joint supervision of Ernst Kummer and Karl Weierstrass. Otto Frostman
Otto Albin Frostman (3 January 1907 – 29 December 1977) was a Swedish mathematician, known for his work in potential theory and complex analysis. Frostman earned his Ph.D. in 1935 at Lund University under the Hungarian-born mathematician Marcel Riesz, the younger brother of Frigyes Riesz. Masayoshi Nagata
Masayoshi Nagata ( Japanese: 永田 雅宜 ''Nagata Masayoshi''; February 9, 1927 – August 27, 2008) was a Japanese mathematician, known for his work in the field of commutative algebra. Work Nagata's compactification theorem shows that algebraic varieties can be embedded in complete varieties. The Chevalley–Iwahori–Nagata theorem describes the quotient of a variety by a group. In 1959, he introduced a counterexample to the general case of Hilbert's fourteenth problem on invariant theory. His 1962 book on local rings contains several other counterexamples he found, such as a commutative Noetherian ring that is not catenary, and a commutative Noetherian ring of infinite dimension.
