Wooshin Golden Suites Fire
The Wooshin Golden Suites Fire was a fire that occurred at an officetel in Marine City, Haeundae, Busan, South Korea on October 1, 2010. The fire started on the fourth floor, caused by a spark from an electrical outlet, and rapidly spread to the top of the building via external combustible cladding; five injuries were reported. Marco Polo Condo Fire
The Marco Polo condo fire was a high-rise fire that occurred at 2:17 p.m. on July 14, 2017, in the 36-story Marco Polo condominium building at 2333 Kapiolani Boulevard in the McCully- Mōiliili neighborhood of Honolulu, Hawaii. 4 people were killed, and 13 others (including 1 firefighter) were injured. Over 200 units were damaged or destroyed giving the destruction of the building at more than $100 million. Additionally, concern about the abatement of asbestos, which was built into the Marco Polo structure, is under investigation by the state of Hawai'i's Department of Health and Department of Labor's workplace safety division. 2020 Icheon Fire
A major fire occurred on 29 April 2020 at a construction site in Icheon, South Korea, killing 39 people and injuring another 10. Blood samples taken from 23 victims indicate most had died from carbon monoxide poisoning. Autopsies have been completed on 15 of the 39 people killed, as recommended by South Korea authorities, but has angered victims' families. All killed workers were irregular or subcontract workers. The building under construction has four floors above-ground and two more underground. The building did not have sprinklers or other obligatory safety measures. The fire broke out when some 78 workers were in the sub-basement working on polyurethane foam. The first explosion occurred around 13:30 (4:30 UTC). At least 10 explosions were heard. Miryang Hospital Fire
On 26 January 2018, a fire at the Sejong Hospital in the South Korean city of Miryang killed 41 people and injured 153. It was South Korea's deadliest fire in nearly a decade. The fire occurred one month after 29 people died in a gym fire in the city of Jecheon. The cause of the fire is under investigation. Hospitals The Sejong Hospital and adjacent Sejong Nursing Hospital were established in 2008 by the Hyoseong Medical Foundation. The Sejong Hospital is a large general hospital; the hospital and the Sejong Nursing Hospital have 95 beds and 98 beds respectively with 27 medical staff each. 2017 Jecheon Fire
A major fire occurred on 21 December 2017, at the Duson Sporium sport center (두손스포리움, Duson Seupolium) in Jecheon, South Korea, killing at least 29 people and injuring another 36. Twenty of those killed were trapped in a sauna on the second floor of the building, which also housed a variety of other commercial establishments including a gym, a golf practice facility, and a number of restaurants. Around 20 people were rescued from the roof. Preliminary reports indicated that victims were incapacitated by toxic smoke, which was produced so quickly that they were unable to evacuate; smoke inhalation was also the cause of many injuries.
