Women's chess in Australia has been occurring since the 1930s and competitive chess tournaments in Australia were taking place on a state level by 1934. History During the 1930s, women were encouraged to play chess because the sport was not seen as a bridge to gambling. In 1940, a study of 314 women in New Zealand and Australia was done. Most of the women in the study were middle class, conservative, Protestant and white. The study found that 183 participated in sport. The ninth most popular sport that these women participated in was chess, with 3 having played the sport. The sport was tied with croquet, billiards, chess, fishing, field hockey, horse racing, squash, table tennis and shooting. Competitive chess There were chess championships for women being organised by the 1940s. A New South Wales's women's championship was held in 1936, 1939 and 1941. Biljana Dekic
Biljana Dekić (born in Belgrade, former Yugoslavia) is a chess Woman International Master who has represented Australia in eleven Chess Olympiads. Chess career Dekic was a member of the national Women's Chess Team representing Yugoslavia in international women's chess tournaments. For her results, Dekic was awarded the title of Yugoslav National Chess Master. In 1988 Dekic immigrated to Australia with her husband and 2 children, becoming the strongest female chess player in Australia at the time, and later became an Australian citizen. Biljana has represented Australia in 12 Women's Chess Olympiads in 1990, 1992, 1994, 1996, 1998, 2000, 2002, 2008, 2010,2012,2014 and 2016. Her best results were in the 30th Chess Olympiad in Manila 1992 where she scored 8/14 on board one, and the 40th Chess Olympiad in Istanbul 2012 where she scored 6/9 on the reserve board. Anne Slavotinek (born 13 May 1963) is an Australian chess Woman International Master (1985), two-times Australian Women's Chess Championships winner (1982, 1984). Chess career Slavotinek competed many times in the individual finals of the Australian Women's Chess Championship and twice won this tournament: in 1982 and 1984. In 1981, in Baguio she participated in Women's World Chess Championship Asian Pacific Zonal tournament and ranked in 10th plce.
