Women's World Chess Championship
The Women's World Chess Championship (WWCC) is played to determine the world champion in women's chess. Like the World Chess Championship, it is administered by FIDE. Unlike with most sports recognized by the International Olympic Committee, where competition is either "mixed" (containing everyone) or split into men and women, in chess women are both allowed to compete in the "open" division (including the World Chess Championship) yet also have a separate Women's Championship (only open to women). History Era of Menchik The Women's World Championship was established by FIDE in 1927 as a single tournament held alongside the Chess Olympiad. The winner of that tournament, Vera Menchik, did not have any special rights as the men's champion did—instead she had to defend her title by playing as many games as all the challengers. Natalia Kowalska (1918 – unknown) was a Polish chess master. She was a Women's World Chess Championship participant (1935). Róża Herman
Róża Maria Herman (16 January 1902 – 7 March 1995) was a Polish chess player. She was awarded the title International Woman Master by FIDE in 1950. In June 1935, she took 4th place at the first Polish women's championship, held in Warsaw, which was won by Regina Gerlecka. Two months later, Herman tied for 6th at the 5th Women's World Championship in Warsaw (Vera Menchik won). In 1936, she participated in the women's international tournament in Semmering, Austria, won by Sonja Graf. Herman finished 11th. The next year, she finished 6th in the second Polish women's championship, won by Gerlecka again. In August 1937, Herman tied for 10-16th at the 6th Women's World Championship in Stockholm (Vera Menchik won). In 1939, she tied for 1st-2nd with Gerlecka at the Warsaw women's championship. Edith Holloway
Edith Martha Holloway (6 December 1867 – 8 May 1956) was a volunteer nurse in Serbia during World War I and a British chess player. She was the daughter of sculptor John Denton Crittenden (1834–1877), who exhibited at the Royal Academy. Winner of the first post-World War I British Women's Championship in 1919, she was in the prize list in several subsequent contests, taking the title for a second time in 1936 at the age of sixty-eight. She played for England in the 1st unofficial Chess Olympiad at Paris 1924, her individual statistics being +2 −9 =2 (13 games in total, including the preliminaries). Holloway was the first woman to play in an Olympiad, and the event was notable for her defeat of Peter Potemkine, a Russian Master who had settled in France.
