Wisconsin's 42nd Assembly District
The 42nd Assembly District of Wisconsin is one of 99 districts in the Wisconsin State Assembly. Located in central Wisconsin, the district comprises most of Columbia County, as well as northwest Dodge County, southern Green Lake County, and parts of southeast Marquette County and western Fond du Lac County. The district includes the cities of Fox Lake, Lodi, Markesan, Montello, and Ripon, as well as the villages of Brandon, Cambria, Fairwater, Friesland, Kingston, Marquette, Poynette, Randolph, Rio, and Wyocena. The district also contains Ripon College and the historic Little White Schoolhouse in Ripon—the birthplace of the Republican Party. Cambria, Wisconsin
Cambria is a village in Columbia County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 767 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Madison Metropolitan Statistical Area. History The town was incorporated in 1866. It was first called Florence, or Langdon's Mills, later Bellville, and finally Cambria, the Latin name for Wales, probably on account of the Welsh settlers who came there in 1845. Preceding the first Welsh colonists by about a year were two brothers, John and Samuel Langdon. In 1844, they settled on the site of the present village of Cambria, Samuel P. Langdon building a sawmill on a branch of Duck Creek, the other opening a small stock of merchandise. They surveyed and platted four blocks, and called the village Florence. But the mill dominated the landscape in those days, and the settlement around it was called Langdon's Mills. Republican Party (United States)
The Republican Party, also referred to as the GOP ("Grand Old Party"), is one of the two major contemporary political parties in the United States. The GOP was founded in 1854 by anti-slavery activists who opposed the Kansas–Nebraska Act, which allowed for the potential expansion of chattel slavery into the western territories. Since Ronald Reagan's presidency in the 1980s, conservatism has been the dominant ideology of the GOP. It has been the main political rival of the Democratic Party since the mid-1850s. The Republican Party's intellectual predecessor is considered to be Northern members of the Whig Party, with Republican presidents Abraham Lincoln, Rutherford B. Hayes, Chester A. Little White Schoolhouse
The Republican Schoolhouse, also known as Little White Schoolhouse or Birthplace of the Republican Party, is a historic former schoolhouse at 305 Blackburn Street in Ripon, Wisconsin. Built in 1853, it was designated a National Historic Landmark for its role in the 1854 founding of the Republican Party. It is now a local history museum. History Construction The structure was built in its original location in 1853 as a school. It was championed as part of a wider education initiative by a New York transplant, Alvan Bovay. Bovay used his position in founding the school to further involve himself in politics, becoming a founder of the Republican Party, which formed during a meeting at the schoolhouse. The building is a single-story wood frame structure, with a gabled roof and clapboarded exterior. Ripon College (Wisconsin)
Ripon College is a private liberal arts college in Ripon, Wisconsin. As of fall 2018, the college enrolled around 800 students, the majority of whom lived on campus. Students came from 14 nations and 33 states, 53% were female, and nearly 70% of students were Wisconsin residents. History Ripon College was founded in 1851, although its first class of students did not enroll until 1853. It was first known as Brockway College, named for William S. Brockway, who gave the most, $25, in a fundraising effort. Ripon's first class, four women, graduated in June 1867. The college was founded with ties to local churches, but early in its history the institution became secular. In 1868 formal ties with Presbyterian and Congregational churches were cut, but Ripon would retain some ties to its religious past. Wyocena is a village in Columbia County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 768 at the 2010 census. The village is located within the Town of Wyocena. It is part of the Madison Metropolitan Statistical Area. History A tornado struck the village on April 25, 2008 destroying several homes. Geography Wyocena is located at (43.494319, -89.309191). Rio (pronounced "rye-oh") is a village in Columbia County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 1,059 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Madison Metropolitan Statistical Area. The village rests primarily in the town of Otsego. The Village of Rio calls itself "Camper Country USA" due to several campgrounds located near the village. Poynette, Wisconsin
Poynette is a village in Columbia County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 2,590 at the 2020 census. It is part of the Madison Metropolitan Statistical Area. History Poynette was named after Pierre Paquette (1796–1836), an early fur trader and settler of south central Wisconsin. When an application was made for a post office in the settlement, Paquette's name was misread as Poynette, and the post office was mistakenly named "Poynette". The village was then named after the post office. The community was incorporated in 1892.
