Winston And Bone Valley Railroad
The Winston and Bone Valley Railroad was a railroad line running the Bone Valley region of Central Florida. It connected to the South Florida Railroad main line (the current CSX A Line) near Lakeland, Florida, Lakeland. A vast majority of the line remains in service by CSX Transportation, who operates it today as their Bone Valley Subdivision. History The Winston and Bone Valley Railroad began operations in 1892. It was founded by J.D. Griffin and William Mills Winn, who had operated a lumber mill just four miles northwest of Lakeland since 1884. They relocated the mill to a location four miles west of Lakeland in 1892. The location of this lumber mill became known as Winnston (named for Winn), which would later be shortened to Winston, Florida, Winston. Griffin and Winn built the Winston and Bone Valley Railroad to serve the lumber mill. Plant System
The Plant System named after its owner, Henry B. Plant, was a system of railroads and steamboats in the U.S. South, taken over by the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad in 1902. The original line of the system was the Savannah, Florida and Western Railway, running across southern Georgia. The Plant Investment Company was formed in 1882 to lease and buy other railroads and expand the system. Other major lines incorporated into the system include the Savannah and Charleston Railroad and the Brunswick and Western Railroad. History The Atlantic and Gulf Railroad went bankrupt on January 1, 1877, and Henry Plant bought it on November 4, 1879, reorganizing it as the Savannah, Florida and Western Railway on December 9. The Lakeland Subdivision is a CSX Transportation rail line in Florida. It runs along CSX's A Line from just west of Lakeland, Florida, Lakeland and heads west through Plant City, Florida, Plant City to the community of Mango, Florida, Mango in Hillsborough County, Florida, Hillsborough County, just east of Tampa, Florida, Tampa. The east end of line is at Lakeland Junction, where it continues west from the Carters Subdivision of the A Line. It also connects to the Vitis Subdivision at Lakeland Junction. In Mango, the line connects with the Tampa Terminal Subdivision. The Lakeland Subdivision runs through the middle of Plant City, Florida, Plant City, where it crosses CSX's other main line, the S Line (Yeoman Subdivision). Christina Lake, also called Christina Pit, is a wedge-shaped lake. This lake is a manmade freshwater lake just west of Lakeland Highlands, Florida. It is a mine excavation that was landscaped to become a lake. This lake has a surface area. It is bounded on the east by a narrow strip of land that separates it from another converted mine pit, now called Six Pound Pond. On the north is County Road 540A, on the northeast is a business property, on the west is S. Florida Avenue (State Route 37) and on the south are residences on the north side of Christina Lake Drive. There are no public boat ramps or no swimming areas on Christina Lake's shores. Medulla is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) in western Polk County, Florida, United States. It is part of the Lakeland– Winter Haven Metropolitan Statistical Area. Medulla is an affluent residential community located south of the Lakeland city limits, and north of the Mulberry city limits. Charlotte Harbor And Northern Railway
The Charlotte Harbor and Northern Railway is a historic railroad line that at its greatest extent serviced Gasparilla Island in Charlotte Harbor and a major shipping port that once operated there. The railroad's principal purpose was to transport phosphate mined along the Peace River and in the Bone Valley region of Central Florida to the port to be shipped. It also brought passengers to the island community of Boca Grande on Gasparilla Island, and is largely responsible for making Boca Grande the popular tourist destination it is today. Mulberry is a city in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 3,817 at the 2010 census. Mulberry is home to Badcock Home Furniture. It is part of the Lakeland– Winter Haven Metropolitan Statistical Area, with parts of unincorporated Lakeland on its northern boundary. Mulberry is home to the 334-acre Alafia River Reserve. History The first white settlers appeared in the Mulberry area in the 1840s. The first industry in Mulberry was logging the longleaf yellow pine which dominated the area. The town had no official name, but the railroad which came through town stopped at a mulberry tree to let off passengers and drop off the mail.
