Willie John O'Connell
Willie John O'Connell (1869-25 April 1897) was an Irish people, Irish Hurling, hurler who played as a quarter-back at senior level for the Cork county hurling team, Cork county team. O'Connell made his first appearance for the team during the All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship 1893, 1893 championship and was a regular member of the team for the next three seasons. During that time he won two All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship, All-Ireland medals and two Munster Senior Hurling Championship, Munster medals. At club level O'Connell played with the St Finbarr's National Hurling & Football Club, St Finbarr's club. O'Connell died following a freak accident in a trial game following a clash with teammate Denis Coughlan. He was the first member of the Gaelic Athletic Association to die on the field of play. St Finbarr's National Hurling & Football Club
St Finbarr's National Hurling & Football Club or St Finbarr's Hurling and Football Club is a Gaelic Athletic Association club based in the Togher area of Cork city, County Cork, Ireland. St Finbarr's, who play in royal blue and gold jerseys, are the only club in Ireland to win All-Ireland club championships in both hurling and football. The club has won Cork County Senior Championships in every decade except the first decade of the 21st century. This record was almost upheld in 2009 when the club reached the final in the Cork County Senior Football Championship, only to lose out by a point to Clonakilty. Between 1980 and 1982, the club won three Cork County Hurling Championships in a row. This feat had not been repeated until Imokilly did so between 2017 and 2019.
