William Thorne (mayor Of Cape Town)
Sir William Thorne (27 January 1839 – 28 March 1917) was a draper, milliner and businessman in Cape Town. He was also an active civil servant and Mayor of Cape Town. Early life Thorne was born in Pembrokeshire, Wales and as a young man, served his apprenticeship with West End drapers and outfitters and gained his experiences in the drapery business, while he worked at Harvey Nichols in London. In 1860 he emigrated to the Cape Colony. Business life Shortly after his arrival at the Cape, Thorne joined the brothers Samson and William Stuttaford, who operated as drapers and haberdashers named, Povall & Stuttaford, in Darling Street in Cape Town. In 1867, diamonds were discovered in the northern region of the Cape Colony and in 1868, Samson Stuttaford temporarily went on his own, but William Stuttaford and Thorne continued trading under the title of Thorne, Stuttaford and Co. Adderley Street, Cape Town, Looking NE - Ca
Adderley is a village and civil parish in the English county of Shropshire, several kilometres north of Market Drayton. It is known as Eldredelei in the Domesday Book. The Irish statesman Robert le Poer was parish priest of Adderley in 1319. Here is the description of the village from ''The National Gazetteer of Great Britain and Ireland'' (1868): "ADDERLEY, (or Atherley), a parish in the hundred of North Bradford, in the county of Salop, 4 miles to the N.W. of Market Drayton. It is situated on the Grand Junction canal and the river Weaver. It comprises the townships of the Morrey and Spoonley. Stuttafords
Stuttaford's was a chain of upscale department stores in South Africa, Botswana and Namibia that operated for 159 years from 1858 through 2017. It was nicknamed the "Harrod's of South Africa". At closing it had seven stores in South Africa, two in Botswana, and one in Namibia. It continues to operate in Namibia only. History Founder Samson Rickard Stuttaford opened his first shop in 1857 in Cape Town city centre. His son was Richard Stuttaford (b. 1870) was a prominent businessman and entered the firm in 1886. In 1859 Povall & Stuttaford was established. In 1868 the company Thorne, Stuttaford & Co. was established in collaboration with William Thorne. Its main Cape Town store at the corner of Adderley and Hout streets, opened in 1938, was designed by in-house Harrods architect Louis David Blanc, echoing the style of the London department store's buildings. Transvaal Republic
The South African Republic ( nl, Zuid-Afrikaansche Republiek, abbreviated ZAR; af, Suid-Afrikaanse Republiek), also known as the Transvaal Republic, was an independent Boer Republic in Southern Africa which existed from 1852 to 1902, when it was annexed into the British Empire as a result of the Second Boer War. The ZAR was established as a result of the 1852 Sand River Convention, in which the British government agreed to formally recognise independence of the Boers living north of the Vaal River. Relations between the ZAR and Britain started to deteriorate after the British Cape Colony expanded into the Southern African interior, eventually leading to the outbreak of the First Boer War between the two nations. Adderley Street
Adderley Street is a street in Cape Town, South Africa. It is considered the main street of the central business district (downtown) of Cape Town. The Christmas lights, night markets, main train station and numerous shops and restaurants and office towers are on this thoroughfare. History The street was originally named ''Heerengracht'', after the canal (''"gracht"'') which ran down its centre, and which had its origins in the rivers from Table Mountain. At the time the street was more of a wide walkway beside the canal, which was crossed by various stone bridges. The network of canals were covered over, throughout Cape Town, in the 1860s. The Heerengracht river and canal therefore became an underground pipe-line. Kimberley, Northern Cape
Kimberley is the capital and largest city of the Northern Cape province of South Africa. It is located approximately 110 km east of the confluence of the Vaal and Orange Rivers. The city has considerable historical significance due to its diamond mining past and the siege during the Second Anglo-Boer war. British businessmen Cecil Rhodes and Barney Barnato made their fortunes in Kimberley, and Rhodes established the De Beers diamond company in the early days of the mining town. The Cape Colony ( nl, Kaapkolonie), also known as the Cape of Good Hope, was a British Empire, British colony in present-day South Africa named after the Cape of Good Hope, which existed from 1795 to 1802, and again from 1806 to 1910, when it united with three other colonies to form the Union of South Africa. Clarence Thomas (born June 23, 1948) is an American jurist who serves as an associate justice of the Supreme Court of the United States. He was nominated by President George H. W. Bush to succeed Thurgood Marshall and has served since 1991. After Marshall, Thomas is the second African American to serve on the Court and its longest-serving member since Anthony Kennedy's retirement in 2018. Thomas was born in Pin Point, Georgia.
