William T. Thompson (Nebraska Politician)
William T. Thompson (May 23, 1860 – June 20, 1939) was an American lawyer who served as state Nebraska Attorney General and Solicitor of the United States Treasury. Biography William Townsend Thompson was born near Fennimore, Wisconsin, on May 23, 1860. After being orphaned at age 11 he was raised first by a family friend, and later by an older, married sister in Pottawattamie County, Iowa. At age 19 he began attending Simpson College in Indianola, Iowa, teaching school to pay his tuition, and also studying law. In 1884 Thompson was admitted to the bar in Des Moines. He practiced for a year in Indianola, and then relocated to Central City, Nebraska. A Republican, Thompson served a term as Merrick County Attorney (1889 to 1901) before serving two terms in the Nebraska House of Representatives, 1899 to 1901 and 1903 to 1905. ''The Green Bag'' was a popular legal magazine published in Boston between 1889 and 1914—the Progressive Era—containing news of legal events, biographies, and essays, generally in a lighthearted tone. The magazine was initially captioned "A Useless, but Entertaining Magazine For Lawyers"; later "An Entertaining Magazine for Lawyers". The name of the magazine was purported to reflect the use of green bags by barristers, although this assertion was disputed. Lawrence Becker (August 10, 1869 – March 12, 1947) was an Indiana lawyer and judge who served as Solicitor of the United States Treasury. Biography Lawrence Becker was born on August 10, 1869, in Finnentrop, Germany, and when he was 10 years old his family emigrated to the United States. Becker was raised in Tolleston, Indiana, and Montana before attending law school at Valparaiso University, from which he graduated in 1896. A Democrat, Becker established a law practice in Hammond, Indiana. From 1898 to 1902 he served as City Attorney and he was Mayor from 1904 to 1911. Becker resigned as mayor to accept appointment as Judge of the Superior Court in Lake County, where he served until 1914.
