William Simms (instrument Maker)
William Simms (7 December 1793 – 21 June 1860) was a British scientific instrument maker. Early life He was born in Birmingham, the second of nine children of William Simms (1763-1828), a toy maker. Soon after William Simm's birth the family moved to London so that William Simms Sr. could help his ailing father, James Simms, who had a jewellery business in Whitecross Street, London, Whitecross Street. This business was soon converted to the manufacture of optical instruments. William Sr. prospered and in 1804 he was elected a Freeman of the City. William Simms Jr. was sent in January 1806 to be educated in mathematics by a Mr. Hayward. After two years education in January 1808 he was apprenticed to Thomas Penstone, a member of the Worshipful Company of Goldsmiths. However William's interests lay elsewhere and in 1808 he was apprenticed to his father. William Gilmore Simms
William Gilmore Simms (April 17, 1806 – June 11, 1870) was an American writer and politician from the American South who was a "staunch defender" of slavery. A poet, novelist, and historian, his ''History of South Carolina'' served as the definitive textbook on state history for much of the 20th century. Literary scholars consider him a major force in antebellum Southern literature; in 1845 Edgar Allan Poe pronounced him the best novelist America had ever produced. William Knox Simms
William Knox Simms (1830 – 25 December 1897) was a brewer, businessman and politician in the early days of South Australia. History Simms migrated to South Australia from England, arriving in December 1845. He formed a partnership with John Hayter and in 1852 purchased the Pirie Street Brewery from its founder James Walsh. In 1853 Simms & Hayter took over the mail business of John and James Chambers, which proved highly profitable. Hayter left in 1855, then was proved insolvent in 1859. From 1856 the firm of W. K. Simms & Co. ran the Halifax Street Brewery, then in 1861 took over the famous West End Brewery, off Hindley Street near West Terrace, and built it up into a highly profitable business; from 1866 to 1879 with partner Edgar Chapman. Willie Simms
Willie Simms (January 16, 1870 – February 26, 1927) was an American United States Champion Jockey by wins, National Champion jockey in Thoroughbred racing and a National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame, U.S. Racing Hall of Fame inductee who won five of the races that would become the Triple Crown of Thoroughbred Racing (United States), U.S. Triple Crown series. An African American, Simms began racing in 1887 and was one of the most successful jockeys using the short-stirrup style (which gave the rider a crouching posture). En route to winning the United States Champion Jockey by wins, United States riding title in 1893 and 1894, Simms won back-to-back Belmont Stakes. On August 17, 1894, Willie Simms won the first five races at Jerome Park Racetrack and finished second in the sixth and last race of the day.
