William Salmon
William Salmon (1644–1713) was an English empiric doctor and a writer of medical texts. He advertised himself as a "Professor of Physick". Salmon held an equivocal place in the medical community. He led apothecaries in opposing attempts by physicians to control the dispensing of medicines, and was derided by physicians as "the King of the Quacks". He has been described as "a brilliant publicist, but not much of a philosopher". Salmon "copied, translated, abridged, enlarged and compiled from the texts of others" to create popular books emphasizing practice over theory, and often marketing his own medications. A prolific author on a broad range of medical topics, Salmon's works were widely read in his time. His books were owned by respected men including Isaac Newton, Daniel Defoe, William Congreve and Samuel Johnson. William Salmon (politician)
William Salmon (June 2, 1802 – February 8, 1868) was an English-born lawyer, judge and political figure in Upper Canada. He represented Norfolk in the Legislative Assembly of Upper Canada from 1838 to 1841 as a Conservative. He was born in Alveston, the son of Colonel George Salmon, and came to Upper Canada with his parents in 1809. Salmon studied law with John Rolph and practised for a time in London before settling in Simcoe. He was married twice: first to Emma, a sister of John Rolph, and then to a daughter of a James Fraser. He served as a major in the Norfolk militia. William Joseph Salmon (29 May 1846 – 25 October 1907) was a businessman and first-class cricketer in New Zealand. Personal life Salmon was born in Sydney. He moved to New Zealand with his parents in 1864 and was apprenticed to the drapery trade. He worked as a commercial traveller for the Kaiapoi Woollen Company for the last 23 years of his life, and also managed the company's Wellington branch. William Charles Salmon (April 3, 1868 – May 13, 1925) was an American politician and a member of the United States House of Representatives for the 7th congressional district of Tennessee. Biography Born on April 3, 1868, near Paris, Tennessee in Henry County, Salmon attended the public schools, Edgewood Normal School, and Valparaiso University at Valparaiso, Indiana. He graduated in law from Cumberland University at Lebanon, Tennessee in 1897. He was admitted to the bar the same year, and he commenced practice in Columbia, Tennessee in Maury County. Career Salmon taught in public and private schools for six years and also engaged in agricultural pursuits. He served as special circuit judge of the eleventh judicial circuit of Tennessee in 1908.
