William Preston (actor)
William Preston (August 26, 1921 – July 10, 1998) was an American actor. He did not start his acting career until he was at the age of 47 but subsequently appeared in more than sixty productions of Shakespeare's plays. He had a Master's degree in English literature from Penn State. He is perhaps best known for his role as recurring character Carl "Oldie" Olsen on ''Late Night with Conan O'Brien''. Among his many movie roles, he played John, the bum, from ''The Fisher King'' (1991), a blacksmith in ''Far and Away'' (1992), and the flask mourner in ''Family Business'' (1989). He later appeared in ''Waterworld'' (1995), '' Reckless'' (1995), ''Blue in the Face'' (1995), and ''The Crucible'' (1996). Billy Dewon Preston Jr. (born October 26, 1997) is an American professional basketball player. A power forward, he attended four high schools: St. John Bosco High School, Redondo Union High School, Prime Prep Academy, and Oak Hill Academy. He was ranked among the top recruits of his class, earning McDonald's All-American honors while at Oak Hill. Following high school, Preston enrolled at the University of Kansas and had signed to play basketball for the Jayhawks. In November 2017, he was involved in an on-campus car accident that resulted in no injuries. William Everett Preston (September 2, 1946 – June 6, 2006) was an American keyboardist, singer and songwriter whose work encompassed R&B, rock, soul, funk, and gospel. Preston was a top session keyboardist in the 1960s, during which he backed artists such as Little Richard, Sam Cooke, Ray Charles, the Everly Brothers, Reverend James Cleveland, the Beatles and the Rolling Stones. William Preston (bishop)
William Preston, D.D. ( – ) was an Irish Anglican bishop. Life William Preston was the son of John Preston of Hincaster, Westmorland, by his third wife Ann. He was educated at Heversham Grammar School and admitted a sizar at Trinity College, Cambridge in 1749 at the age of 19. He graduated B.A. in 1753, M.A. in 1756. He became a Fellow of Trinity in 1755, and was rector of Ockham, Surrey from 1764 to 1784. He gave up his fellowship in 1765. Preston spent some time as a chaplain to Philip Yonge, the bishop of Norwich. He then went to Vienna, as chaplain to Lord Stormont. He acted as the British chargé d'affaires in Naples, where he had moved for his health, in the absence of Sir William Hamilton. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1778. After becoming chaplain and secretary to Charles Manners, 4th Duke of Rutland, Preston was nominated as Bishop of Killala and Achonry on 13 October 1784, and consecrated on 11 November that year. William Ballard Preston (November 25, 1805 – November 16, 1862) was an American politician who served as a Confederate States Senator from Virginia from February 18, 1862, until his death in November. He previously served as the 19th United States Secretary of the Navy from 1849 to 1850. He is also the cousin of William Campbell Preston and William Preston. William Alfred Preston (July 26, 1848 – August 22, 1944) was a Canadian politician, who served as a Member of Provincial Parliament in Ontario from 1907 to 1911. Biography William Preston was born July 26, 1848, in Bethany, Manvers Township, Durham County, Ontario. William Preston (Freemason)
William Preston (7 August 1742 – 1 April 1818) was a Scotland, Scottish author, editor and lecturer, born in Edinburgh. After attending school and college he became secretary to the linguist Thomas Ruddiman, who became his guardian on the death of his father. On the death of Thomas, Preston became a printer for Walter Ruddiman, Thomas' brother. In 1760 he moved to London and started a distinguished career with the printer William Strahan (publisher), William Strahan. He became a Freemason, instituting a system of lectures of instruction, and publishing ''Illustrations of Masonry'', which ran to several editions. It was under Preston that the Lodge of Antiquity seceded from the Premier Grand Lodge of England, Moderns Grand Lodge to become "The Grand Lodge of All England South of the River Trent" for ten years.
