William Peters (Australian Politician)
William Charles Peters (15 April 1903 – 21 February 1978) was an Australian politician and a member of the New South Wales Legislative Council between 1959 and 1978. He was a member of the Labor Party. Peters began his working life as a hatter and joined the Felt Hatters Union when he was 16 years old. His union interest eventually overtook his career as a hatter and he was secretary of the union for 36 years from 1936 to 1972. He contested a by-election in 1946 for the state seat of Ashfield for the Labor Party but was defeated by the Liberal incumbent Athol Richardson.Richardson had resigned to contest a federal seat. When he was unsuccessful he then re-contested Ashfield. He again contested Ashfield at the 1947 election but was again defeated by Richardson. Six years later he was elected to Ashfield Council where he served for 24 years including two years as mayor from 1962 to 1964. Pyrmont, New South Wales
Pyrmont is an inner-city suburb of Sydney, in the state of New South Wales, Australia 2 kilometres south-west of the Sydney central business district in the local government area of the City of Sydney. It is also part of the Darling Harbour region. As of 2011, it is Australia's most densely populated suburb. Pyrmont was once a vital component of Sydney's industrial waterfront, with wharves, shipbuilding yards, factories and woolstores. As industry moved out, the population and the area declined. In recent years it has experienced redevelopment with an influx of residents and office workers. History Pyrmont contained a mineral spring of cold water bubbling out of a rock and was thus named for a similar natural spring in Bad Pyrmont, close to Hanover, Germany. Municipality Of Ashfield
The Municipality of Ashfield was a local government area in the Inner West of Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. It is about west of the Sydney central business district. The municipality was proclaimed on 28 December 1871 as the "Borough of Ashfield", which changed to the "Municipality of Ashfield" in 1906. On 12 May 2016, Ashfield merged with Marrickville Council and the Municipality of Leichhardt to form the Inner West Council. The last mayor of the municipality was councillor Lucille McKenna, a member of the Australian Labor Party. In December 2021, a majority of voters in Inner West Council voted in favour of reversing the 2016 merger and separating the three pre-existing councils of Ashfield, Leichhardt and Marrickville. Cessnock is an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of New South Wales in the rural fringe of the Hunter. It is represented by Clayton Barr of the Labor Party. It includes all of City of Cessnock (including Cessnock and Kurri Kurri), part of Singleton Council (including Broke and Belford) and a small part of the City of Lake Macquarie (including Barnsley and West Wallsend). History Cessnock was created in 1913, but was abolished in 1920, with the introduction of proportional representation and absorbed into Maitland. George Neilly
George Henry Neilly (3 March 1917 – 6 May 1987) was an Australian politician. He was a member of the New South Wales Parliament from 1954 to 1977. He was a member of the Labor Party (ALP). Neilly was born in the Hunter Region coal mining town of Kurri Kurri. He was the son of a carter and was educated to 8th grade level at Maitland High School. At age 17 he became a coal miner at Abermain Colliery. He was an office-holder in the Miners' Federation and was general secretary of the Northern Lodge of the union from 1954 to 1959. He saw service during World War Two on HMAS ''Australia''. In 1954 he was elected to the New South Wales Legislative Council through an indirect election by the New South Wales Parliament. He was elected for the balance of the term of Francis Buckley who resigned from parliament. He won ALP pre-selection for the seat of Cessnock at the 1959 state election. Athol Richardson
Athol Railton Richardson (15 May 1897 – 22 May 1982) was an Australian politician and judge. Richardson represented the Electoral district of Ashfield for the United Australia Party and the Liberal Party from 11 May 1935 until 5 February 1952. Early life Richardson was born to parents Stephen Arthur Richardson, a Salvation Army officer, and mother Elizabeth Sarah Urquhart in Newcastle, New South Wales. Richardson jnr served in World War I in the 2nd and 4th squadrons of the Australian Flying Corps in France from 1917 till 1919. He married Isabel McCrea Watson on 23 February 1928 and had one daughter and one son. Political career Richardson entered politics by contesting and winning the Electoral district of Ashfield for the United Australia Party at the 1935 election.
