William Oliver (artist, Born 1804)
William Oliver (1804–1853) was an English landscape artist who painted in oils but chiefly in watercolours, painting views in England, France, Spain, Italy, Switzerland, Germany and the Tyrol, being especially fond of the Pyrenees. He was not related to William Oliver Williams (1823–1901) who also used the professional name of William Oliver. Life and family Oliver was born about 1804 in Sudbury, Suffolk. In 1840 he married his former student Emma Sophia Eburne (1820–1885) and they had two children: William Redivivus Oliver (1843–1908) and Emma Caroline Oliver (1844–1903). Oliver died on 2 November 1853 at Langley Mill House, Halstead, Essex. The death certificate gave the cause of death as 'hypertrophy of the heart'. Career Oliver began to exhibit in 1829 when he sent to the Society of British Artists (now the Royal Society of British Artists) ''A Beach Scene in Kent'' and ''Fish Boat''. William Pearly Oliver
William Pearly Oliver (February 11, 1912 in Wolfville, Nova Scotia – May 26, 1989 in Lucasville) worked at the Cornwallis Street Baptist Church for twenty-five years (1937–1962) and was instrumental in developing the four leading organizations to support Black Nova Scotians in the 20th century: Nova Scotia Association for the Advancement of Colored People (1945), the Nova Scotia Human Rights Commission (1967), the Black United Front (1969) and the Black Cultural Centre for Nova Scotia (1983). He was instrumental in supporting the case of Viola Desmond. Oliver was awarded the Order of Canada in 1984. His wife Pearleen Borden Oliver was also a strong advocate for social justice. William Oliver ( – 17 March 1764) was a British physician and philanthropist, and inventor of the Bath Oliver. He was born at Ludgvan, Cornwall, and baptised on 27 August 1695, described as the son of John Oliver the owner of the Trevarno Estate. His family, originally seated at Trevarnoe in Sithney, resided afterwards in Ludgvan, and the estate of Treneere in Madron, which belonged to him, was sold in 1768 after his death. When he decided to erect a monument in Sithney churchyard to the memory of his parents, Alexander Pope wrote the epitaph and drew the design of the pillar. He was admitted a pensioner of Pembroke College, Cambridge on 17 September 1714, graduated M.B. in 1720, and M.D. in 1725, and to complete his medical training, entered at Leiden University on 15 November 1720. Sir William Oliver FRSE (1885–1962) was a 20th-century Scottish business advisor and the first Professor of Organisation of Industry and Commerce. Life Oliver was born in Edinburgh in 1885. He was educated at George Watson's College. He then studied engineering at the University of Edinburgh (specialising in electrical engineering) before joining Parsons Peebles Ltd. working on power plant design and creation. In 1919 he began lecturing in the Organisation of Business and Commerce, the cost being underwritten by Edinburgh Chamber of Commerce and other city business interests. In 1925 the University of Edinburgh made him their first Professor of Organisation of Business and Commerce. He held this role until 1953 when he was replaced by Professor Norman Charles Hunt. Lieutenant General Sir William Pasfield Oliver (8 September 1901 – 26 February 1981), was a senior British Army officer who served as Vice Chief of the Imperial General Staff from 1955 to 1957. Early life Oliver was born in Teddington, Middlesex, the son of Royal Navy captain Pasfield Victor Oliver and Charlotte Winifred Richards. William Bacon Oliver
William Bacon Oliver (May 23, 1867 – May 27, 1948) was a Congressman from Alabama. He was born in Eutaw, Alabama, graduated from the University of Alabama in 1887 and from the law department in 1889. After additional courses at the University of Virginia in the same year, he was admitted to the Alabama bar, and set up a practice in Tuscaloosa. He became dean of the law school of the University of Alabama in 1909, serving until 1913, then ran successfully for Congress in 1914, and remained there for eleven Congresses, not standing for reelection in 1936. He then served as a special assistant to the United States Attorney General from 1939 to 1944, at which time he retired. He died in 1948, and is buried in the Eutaw Cemetery in Eutaw.
