William Murphy (Irish Politician)
William Murphy (12 February 1892 – 16 November 1967) was an Irish Fine Gael politician and Teachta Dála (TD) for Clare (Dáil constituency), Clare from 1951 until his death in 1967. Biography A publican before entering politics, Murphy was an unsuccessful Fine Gael candidate in Clare at the 1937 Irish general election, 1937 general election. He did not stand again until the 1951 Irish general election, 1951 general election, when he was elected to the 14th Dáil. He was re-elected at the next four general elections, in 1954 Irish general election, 1954, 1957 Irish general election, 1957, 1961 Irish general election, 1961 and in 1965 Irish general election, 1965. William Murphy died 16 November 1967, and the 1968 Clare by-election, resulting by-election for his seat in the 18th Dáil was held on 14 March 1968. A Teachta Dála ( , ; plural ), abbreviated as TD (plural ''TDanna'' in Irish, TDs in English), is a member of Dáil Éireann, the lower house of the Oireachtas (the Irish Parliament). It is the equivalent of terms such as ''Member of Parliament'' (MP) or '' Member of Congress'' used in other countries. The official translation of the term is "Deputy to the Dáil", although a more literal translation is "Assembly Delegate". The 1969 Irish general election to the 19th Dáil was held on Wednesday, 18 June, following the Dissolution of Parliament, dissolution of the 18th Dáil on 22 May by President of Ireland, President Éamon de Valera on the request of Taoiseach Jack Lynch. Frank Taylor (Irish Politician)
Francis Taylor (30 May 1914 – 15 April 1998) was an Irish Fine Gael politician. A farmer before entering politics, he was first elected to the Dáil Éireann as a Fine Gael Teachta Dála (TD) for the Clare constituency at the 1969 general election, recapturing the seat held by Fine Gael TD William Murphy, who had died in 1967 and been replaced at the Clare by-election by Fianna Fáil's Sylvester Barrett. Taylor was re-elected at the 1973 and 1977 general elections. When he retired from Dáil Éireann at the 1981 general election, his daughter Madeleine Taylor-Quinn was elected as his successor. Sylvester Barrett
Sylvester Aidan Barrett (18 May 1926 – 8 May 2002) was an Irish Fianna Fáil politician. He served under Jack Lynch and Charles Haughey as Minister for the Environment (1977–1980) and Minister for Defence (1980–1981). Sylvester Barrett was born in Darragh, near Ennis, County Clare, in 1926. His father Frank, who was a founder-member of Fianna Fáil, and his mother Delia Costello, both died in 1931. As a result, he was raised by an uncle and aunt. Barrett was educated at Ballyea National School and St Flannan's College in Ennis. He studied engineering at University College Galway, though did not complete his studies. He was a cadet in the Irish Army and later worked as a rate collector and an auctioneer. He was elected to Dáil Éireann on 14 March 1968 at the by-election in the Clare constituency, held following the death of Fine Gael TD William Murphy.
