William Moore (Queensland Politician)
William John Harlin Moore (10 September 1866 - 14 October 1933) was a member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly. Early life Moore was born at Boort Cottage, Brighton, Victoria, Brighton, Victoria (Australia), Victoria, the son of John Moore and his wife Charlotte (née Harlin). He was educated at Ipswich State and Ipswich Grammar School, Boys' Grammar Schools and in Queensland and Hurstville College in New South Wales. He was a stock buyer for the Queensland Mercantile Company in 1885 and then took up pastoral pursuits. He married Lillian Mary O'Hara. Moore died in October 1933 and his funeral moved from the funeral parlour of Alex Gow at Petrie Bight to the Toowong Cemetery. Petrie Bight
Petrie Bight is a reach (geography), reach of the Brisbane River in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. The land to the north of the bight, centred on the area under the Story Bridge's northern point and around the Brisbane River to Customs House, Brisbane, Customs House is also known as Petrie Bight and was formerly a suburb of Brisbane. The area whilst still informally known as Petrie Bight, was absorbed into the suburbs of the Brisbane CBD and Fortitude Valley during consolidation of suburbs by the Brisbane City Council. With a resurgence in Brisbane residents interested in this part of the city and its history, has meant there is a possibility the Brisbane City Council and Queensland Government may once again reinstate Petrie Bight as a suburb to give the area a better sense of identity. 1907 Queensland State Election
Elections were held in the Australian state of Queensland on 18 May 1907 to elect the 72 members of the state's Legislative Assembly. The election was the first one in which women had a right to vote. The election was the first held since Premier William Kidston, formerly of the Labour Party, had founded a new movement with his own supporters as well as the Parliamentary Conservatives. The end result of the election was an improvement in Kidston's position, although he was still in minority government with Labour support. The main opposition group was Robert Philp's Conservatives. Queensland Legislative Council
The Queensland Legislative Council was the upper house of the parliament in the Australian state of Queensland. It was a fully nominated body which first took office on 1 May 1860. It was abolished by the Constitution Amendment Act 1921, which took effect on 23 March 1922. Consequently, the Legislative Assembly of Queensland is the only unicameral state Parliament in Australia. Two territories, the Northern Territory and Australian Capital Territory, also maintain unicameral parliaments. Most of the early members of the Council came from wealthy families, were well educated and were born in England. Absenteeism was a problem in the early years, with some members returning to England, being absent for several years.
