William Molloy (Irish Politician)
William John Molloy (1884–1965) was an Irish politician. He was an independent member of Seanad Éireann from 1922 to 1931. He was elected at the 1922 Seanad election for 9 years, and lost his seat in the 1931 Seanad election. Independent Politicians In Ireland
Independent politicians, who contest elections without the support of one of the political parties, have played a continuous role in the politics of Ireland since independence in 1922. Provision for independents in electoral law If a candidate is not the candidate of a registered political party, they may be nominated for elections to Dáil Éireann with the assent of 30 electors in the constituency, for elections to the European Parliament with the assent of 60 electors in the constituency, and for local elections with the assent of 15 electors in the local electoral area. They may choose to have the designation non-party next to their name on the ballot paper. Seanad Éireann (; ''Senate of Ireland'') was the upper house of the Oireachtas (Irish Free State), Oireachtas (parliament) of the Irish Free State from 1922 to 1936. It has also been known simply as the Senate, First Seanad, Free State Senate or Free State Seanad. The Senate was established under the 1922 Constitution of the Irish Free State but a number of constitutional amendments were subsequently made to change the manner of its election and its powers. It was eventually abolished in 1936 when it attempted to obstruct constitutional reforms favoured by the government. It sat, like its modern successor, in Leinster House. This is a list of the members of the 1922 Seanad Éireann, the upper house of the Oireachtas (legislature) of the Irish Free State. It was first constituted on 8 December 1922. The Free State Seanad was elected in stages and thus considered to be in permanent session. However, in continuity with its Free State predecessor, the first Seanad elected after 1937 is numbered as the "Second Seanad". Roscommon
Roscommon (; ) is the county town and the largest town in County Roscommon in Ireland. It is roughly in the centre of Ireland, near the meeting of the N60, N61 and N63 roads. The name Roscommon is derived from Coman mac Faelchon who built a monastery there in the 5th century. The woods near the monastery became known as Ros Comáin (''St. Coman's Wood''). This was later anglicised to Roscommon. Its population at the 2016 census was 5,876. History Roscommon was the homeland of the Connachta dynasty, and included such kingdoms as Uí Maine, Delbhna Nuadat, Síol Muirdeach, and Moylurg. Death Of Niall Molloy
Father Niall Molloy (14 April 1933 – 8 July 1985) was a Catholic priest who was killed in mysterious circumstances in Kilcoursey House in Clara, County Offaly, the home of Richard and Therese Flynn. When the Garda Síochána arrived, they found that there were signs of violence in Flynn's bedroom and that there was a large bloodstain on the carpet. The priest died the day after the wedding of the Flynns' daughter Maureen. Richard Flynn was charged with manslaughter and with actual bodily harm, but Judge Frank Roe at his trial, a family friend, directed the jury to give a not guilty verdict. In 2011, a medical examination of brain tissue kept after the original post-mortem revealed that there was a high probability that the priest was alive up to six hours after the initial attack and therefore might have lived if medical help had been summoned. Clara, County Offaly
Clara () is a town on the River Brosna in County Offaly and is the 10th largest town in the midlands of Ireland. The town had a population of 3,336 as of the 2016 census. Clara's local services include churches, banks, credit union, schools, supermarkets, shops, garages, pubs, nightclubs and restaurants. It has its own Garda (police) and fire station while the Midlands Regional Hospital is located approximately eleven kilometres away in Tullamore.
