William Miles (Queensland Politician)
William Miles (5 May 1817 – 22 August 1887) was a politician in Queensland, Australia. He was a Member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly. Personal life Miles was born on 5 May 1817 at Hails Quarry, near Edinburgh, Scotland, the son of William Miles and Alison (née Wilson). He married Mary Taylor in Colinton in 1838 and together they emigrated to New South Wales on the ship ''Duncan'' as assisted migrants and arrived at Sydney on 30 June 1838. He was employed on Mr. W. H. Chapman's station on the Macleay River, until 1852, when he commenced squatting on his own account on the Dawson River (Queensland), Dawson River, in the then colony of Queensland. William Miles died on 22 August 1887 at his home in Toowoomba, when an abscess in his ear lead to an inflammation of his brain. Sir William Miles, 1st Baronet (13 May 1797 – 17 June 1878), was an English politician, agriculturalist and landowner. He was educated at Eton College and Christ Church, Oxford, and was created a baronet on 19 April 1859, of Leigh Court, Somerset. Family Miles was the son of Philip John Miles (1773–1845) by his first marriage to Maria Whetham (1776–1811). His father was a landowner, shipowner, banker and reportedly the first millionaire in Bristol. William Porcher Miles
William Porcher Miles (July 4, 1822 – May 11, 1899) was an American politician who was among the ardent states' rights advocates, supporters of slavery, and Southern secessionists who came to be known as the "Fire-Eaters." He is notable for having designed the most popular variant of the Confederate flag, originally rejected as the national flag in 1861 but adopted as a battle flag by the Army of Northern Virginia under General Robert E. Lee before it was reincorporated. Born in South Carolina, he showed little early interest in politics, and his early career included the study of law and a tenure as a mathematics professor at the Charleston College from 1843 to 1855. In the late 1840s, as sectional issues roiled South Carolina politics, Miles began to speak up on sectional issues. He opposed both the Wilmot Proviso and the Compromise of 1850. William Augustus Miles (c. 1753–1817) was an English political writer. He was also a British agent in the years around the French Revolution. He is not to be confused with William Augustus Miles (1798–1851), penitentiary reformer. Early life Born 1 July 1753 or 1754, he was son of Jefferson Miles, who was employed as proof-master general (died 1763), a supervisory artillery position. As a boy, he ran away from a school near Portsmouth, to support John Wilkes. After travelling in America, Miles returned to England and was appointed in 1770 to the Ordnance Office. He lost the post shortly, by quarrelling with his superiors. Through David Garrick he obtained a civil appointment in the Royal Navy. He served under George Rodney in the West Indies during the American Revolutionary War, was in Newfoundland in 1779, and two years later was a French prisoner of war in St. Lucia.
