William McKenzie (Australian Politician)
William George Alexander McKenzie (3 December 1883 – 4 February 1969) was an Australian politician. He was born in Woodend to hotel-keeper Henry Daniel McKenzie and Elizabeth Perry. He was educated at Wesley College. Melbourne. On 23 June 1914 he married Mary Germaine, in Woodend, with whom he had three children. After the birth of his first child Joyce in Kyneton, he moved with his family to Wonthaggi, Victoria, where he worked for a time as a clerk at the State owned coal mine. From around 1922 he kept a general store at Wonthaggi, and also invested in gold. He served on the Borough of Wonthaggi Council from 1924 to 1952, and was also founding president of the Woodend branch of the Labor Party. In 1927 he was elected to the Victorian Legislative Assembly for Wonthaggi. He was briefly Minister of Agriculture and Mines in 1943, and resumed the portfolio from 1945 to 1947. William Buckingham (Australian Politician)
William John Buckingham (4 December 1890 – 3 June 1964) was an Australian politician. He was born in Nerrena to farmer Thomas Fuller Buckingham and Catherine Brewer. He became a dairy farmer at Leongatha, and on 16 November 1921 married Ella Laura Hyde, with whom he had three children. He was a member of the Country Party, serving as president of the Leongatha branch and of the Central Gippsland district council. In 1947 he was elected to the Victorian Legislative Assembly for Wonthaggi Wonthaggi is a seaside town located south east of Melbourne via the South Gippsland and Bass Highways, in the Bass Coast Shire of Gippsland, Victoria, Australia. Known originally for its coal mining, it is now the largest town in South Gippsl .... He was party whip from 1950 to 1955, when his seat was abolished and he retired. Woodend, Victoria
Woodend () is a town in Victoria, Australia. The town is in the Shire of Macedon Ranges local government area on Dja Dja Wurrung country and is bypassed to the east and north by the Calder Freeway (M79), located about halfway between Melbourne and Bendigo. At the , Woodend had a population of 5,806. History Woodend was first surveyed in 1836 by Major Thomas Mitchell, who opened it up for settlement. When gold was discovered in the area (towards Bendigo and Ballarat), Woodend became the main thoroughfare through the Black Forest, and accommodated many gold-diggers and their families. Woodend Post Office opened on the 20th of July 1854, however it closed shortly after, only to be reopened in one of the citizen's homes. The Woodend Magistrates' Court closed on 1 January 1983. Oakleigh is a suburb in Melbourne, Victoria (Australia), Victoria, Australia 14 km south-east of Melbourne's Melbourne city centre, Central Business District, located within the City of Monash Local government areas of Victoria, local government area. Oakleigh recorded a population of 8,442 at the 2021 Australian census, 2021 census. Once a large independent city, Oakleigh was absorbed into Melbourne as part of the eastward expansion of the metropolis in the 1950s. As a result, it once had its own large historic Central Business District, its own municipality in the former City of Oakleigh and its own suburbs. The area is traditionally known to have a strong Greek cultural influence, largely due to the influx of said immigrants to Australia in the mid-20th century. The Most Excellent Order of the British Empire is a British order of chivalry, rewarding contributions to the arts and sciences, work with charitable and welfare organisations, and public service outside the civil service.
