William Lowndes (1652–1724)
William Lowndes (1 November 1652 – 20 January 1724) was an English Whig politician who sat in the English and British House of Commons from 1695 to 1724. He served as Secretary to the Treasury during the reigns of William III of England and Anne, Queen of Great Britain. Early life Lowndes was born in Winslow, Buckinghamshire on 1 November 1652. He was the son of Robert Lowndes and his second wife Elizabeth FitzWilliam. His father was descended from the Lowndes of Overton, Smallwood, and his grandfather had moved south to Buckinghamshire; other relatives settled in the Province of South Carolina. Lowndes was educated at the free school in Buckingham. He joined HM Treasury as a clerk, and eventually acquired ownership of Bury Manor in Chesham in 1687. William Lowndes (congressman)
William Jones Lowndes (February 11, 1782 – October 27, 1822) was an American lawyer, planter, and politician from South Carolina. He represented the state in the U.S. Congress from 1811 to May 8, 1822, when he resigned for health reasons. Early life The son of Rawlins Lowndes (1721-1800), multi-term legislator and briefly governor of South Carolina during the American Revolutionary War, William Lowndes was one of three children born to Rawlins Lowndes' third wife, the former Sarah Jones (1757-1801), daughter of Col. Charles Jones of Georgia. His paternal grandfather, Charles Lowndes, had moved his family from St. Kitts in the British West Indies in 1730 to South Carolina, but his extravagant spending led to financial ruin. After he committed suicide, his sons Charles and Rawlins were placed in the care of Robert Hall, then the provost-marshal of South Carolina (its chief law enforcement officer). William Selby Lowndes
William Selby Lowndes (''c.'' 1767 – 18 May 1840) was a United Kingdom Member of Parliament. The Lowndes family were conservative Anglican landowners in the English county of Buckinghamshire. This gentry family was prominent in the county during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Richard Lowndes had represented Buckinghamshire in Parliament between 1741 and 1774. Public career William Selby Lowndes served as a knight of the shire representing Buckinghamshire in the United Kingdom House of Commons from 1810 to 1820. He was known as a High Church Anglican and became a supporter of Viscount Sidmouth's policy of limiting the number of dissenting ministers given official toleration. He came into conflict with the Nonconformist minority of the local population in the first decade of the nineteenth century.
