William Lawson (banker)
William Lawson (14 March 1772 – 25 August 1848) was a Canadian businessman, office holder, justice of the peace, and politician. He was born in City of Halifax, Halifax, Nova Scotia, and was the son of John Lawson and Sarah Shatford (who are both buried in the Old Burying Ground (Halifax, Nova Scotia), Old Burying Ground). Business and public career He was a founding director and first president of the Bank of Nova Scotia, now known as Scotiabank. The bank was incorporated by the Nova Scotia Legislative Assembly on Mar 30, 1831 in Halifax Regional Municipality, Halifax, Nova Scotia with William Lawson (banker) (1772–1848) serving as the first president. As a member of the Nova Scotia House of Assembly, he introduced a bill chartering a public bank. The bill ensured that any bank directors were responsible for double the amount of their holdings in case of insolvency. William Lawson (co-operator)
William Lawson (1836–1916) was an English agriculturalist and pioneer co-operator. Lawson owned an experimental farm in Cumberland between the years 1862 and 1872. Early life William Lawson was born at Brayton, Aspatria, in Cumberland in 1836. Together with other members of his family, he received his education at home, where he later declared: "I learned as little as possible." His parents, Sir Wilfrid and Caroline Lawson, he remarked, "were more anxious that their children should be happy and good than that they should be learned and great." However, the children did acquire considerable learning; and at least one member later became great. In his youth, Lawson travelled extensively throughout Europe and the Middle East. At home, he took an active role in field sports, where he managed the Cumberland Foxhounds for his brother, who had acquired some hounds from the famous pack belonging to John Peel. William Lawson (explorer)
William Lawson, (2 June 1774 – 16 June 1850) was a British soldier, explorer, land owner, grazier and politician who migrated to Sydney, New South Wales in 1800. Along with Gregory Blaxland and William Wentworth, he pioneered the 1813 crossing of the Blue Mountains, first successful crossing of the Blue Mountains, New South Wales, Blue Mountains by British colonists. Early life Lawson was born in Finchley, Middlesex, England to John Lawson and his second wife Hannah Summers. His father owned a successful chandler (occupation), chandler business and was a descendant of the aristocratic Richard Lawson of High Riggs, Scottish Lawson family of Cairnmuir House in the Pentland Hills. Lawson was educated in London and trained as a surveyor. He decided to join the British Army and purchased a commission in the New South Wales Corps as an ensign (rank), ensign for £300 in 1799. William Lawson (c.1554–1635) was an English cleric, known as a writer on gardening. Life Lawson was a graduate of Christ Church, Oxford, and vicar of Ormesby, North Riding of Yorkshire from 1583. Works Lawson wrote a two-part work, ''A New Orchard and Garden, Or the best way for Planting, Grafting, and to make any pound good for a Rich Orchard; particularly in the North Parts of England'', London, 1618, dedicated to Sir Henry Belasyse. The second part was entitled ''The Countrie Housewifes Garden'', bearing the date 1617. He claimed it was the result of 48 years' experience and observation only. Another edition appeared in 1622, with a chapter by Simon Harward, on the "Art of Propagating Plants". It was incorporated with Gervase Markham's ''A Way to Get Wealth'', 1623, 1626, 1638, 1648, etc., to 1683, and was periodically enlarged. William Lawson (born 27 February 1987) is a former motorcycle speedway rider from Scotland. Career Lawson's first British league team was Newcastle Diamonds, where he spent the 2003 and 2004 seasons. In 2005, Lawson signed for Edinburgh Monarchs for the 2005 Premier League speedway season. He would stay with the club for four years, while also riding for Wolverhampton Wolves in 2006 and 2007. After spells with Glasgow and Berwick in 2009 he rode with the Belle Vue Aces in the British Elite League during 2010. He announced his retirement before the 2011 season. In 2018, he made a surprise comeback for one of his former clubs the Edinburgh Monarchs. He spent four more seasons with them from 2018 until 2022.
