William Jenkins (Northern Ireland Politician)
William Jenkins (born 25 July 1904) was a unionist politician in Northern Ireland. Jenkins studied at the Belfast College of Technology then worked in Bombay from 1931 to 1956 as the director of a tea company. He then returned to Northern Ireland, where he held numerous directorships, but also found time to sit on the Belfast Corporation as an Ulster Unionist Party member. The Lord Mayor of Belfast is the leader and chairperson of Belfast City Council, elected annually from and by the City's 60 councillors. Sir William Duncan Geddis (9 July 1896 – 12 December 1971) was a unionist politician in Northern Ireland. Geddis studied at Skerries College in Belfast before becoming a clothing manufacturer. He served in the Royal Army Ordnance Corps from 1940 to 1948, retiring with the rank of Major. Sir Martin Kelso Wallace (3 May 1898 – 12 February 1978) was a Unionist politician in Northern Ireland. Wallace attended Methodist College Belfast and served in the RNVR during the First World War. He worked as a company director and was elected as an Ulster Unionist Party member of the Belfast Corporation. He was elected as Lord Mayor of Belfast in 1961 and served for two years. Ulster Unionist Party
The Ulster Unionist Party (UUP) is a unionist political party in Northern Ireland. The party was founded in 1905, emerging from the Irish Unionist Alliance in Ulster. Under Edward Carson, it led unionist opposition to the Irish Home Rule movement. Following the partition of Ireland, it was the governing party of Northern Ireland between 1921 and 1972. It was supported by most unionist voters throughout the conflict known as the Troubles, during which time it was often referred to as the Official Unionist Party (OUP). Under David Trimble, the party helped negotiate the Good Friday Agreement of 1998, which ended the conflict. Trimble served as the first First Minister of Northern Ireland from 1998 to 2002. High Sheriff Of Belfast
The High Sheriff of Belfast is a title and position which was created in 1900 under the Local Government (Ireland) Act 1898, with Sir James Henderson the first holder. Like other high sheriff positions, it is largely a ceremonial post today. The current high sheriff is Councillor John Hussey of the Democratic Unionist Party, who took office in 2022. The high sheriff is theoretically the judicial representative of the King in the city, while the Lord Lieutenant of Belfast is the Sovereign's personal representative. Today, the office is now largely symbolic with few formal duties other than deputising for the Lord Mayor of Belfast at official events.
