South Australian House Of Assembly
The House of Assembly, or lower house, is one of the two chambers of the Parliament of South Australia. The other is the Legislative Council. It sits in Parliament House in the state capital, Adelaide. Overview The House of Assembly was created in 1857, when South Australia attained self-government. The development of an elected legislature — although only men could vote — marked a significant change from the prior system, where legislative power was in the hands of the Governor and the Legislative Council, which was appointed by the Governor. In 1895, the House of Assembly granted women the right to vote and stand for election to the legislature. South Australia was the second place in the world to do so after New Zealand in 1893, and the first to allow women to stand for election. Stirling was superseded by the Electoral district of Heysen in a boundary redistribution for the 1970 South Australian state election, 1970 election. Herbert Dunn (politician)
Herbert Charles Dunn (6 March 1883 – 11 September 1952) was an Australian politician who represented the South Australian House of Assembly seat of Stirling from 1938 to 1952. He was an independent until 1940 when he joined the Liberal and Country League. Dunn was born at Woodchester and attended the Woodchester and Strathalbyn public schools. He was a farmer in the Finniss district before entering politics, later retiring to Strathalbyn. He was a District Council of Strathalbyn councillor and its chairman for over a decade prior to his election to parliament, was a Justice of the Peace, and served on the committee of the Strathalbyn Agricultural Society. He was elected to the House of Assembly as an independent at the 1938 election, defeating long serving Liberal and Country League MP Percy Heggaton. William McAnaney
William McAnaney (13 June 1910 – 27 October 1987) was an Australian politician. He was a member of the South Australian House of Assembly between 1963 and 1975, representing the electorates of Stirling from 1963 to 1970 and Heysen from 1970 to 1975, for the Liberal and Country League and its successor the Liberal Party. McAnaney was educated at a state school and at Scotch College. He worked for the National Bank after graduating high school, and studied accountancy and commerce at night. In 1934, he began farming at Langhorne Creek. He attempted to enlist for service in World War II, but was rejected and served in the Volunteer Defence Corps.
