William Inglis and Son Pty Ltd is Australia's largest and oldest bloodstock auctioneer. The business was founded by William Inglis in 1867, and is still owned by the Inglis family, with family members actively engaged in the running of the business. By the 1940s, William Inglis and Son was acknowledged as a prominent auction firm, not just in bloodstock, but in general livestock auctions at the then Sydney saleyards in the suburb of Homebush However, as this article claims, by this stage William Inglis and Son Pty Ltd was most notable for its "world famous Sydney Yearling Sales", held at its Newmarket facility at Randwick Racecourse. William Inglis (auctioneer)
William Inglis (8 March 1832 – 12 January 1896) was an Australian auctioneer and stock agent. He was born in Sydney to merchant Thomas Inglis and Catherine Ross. He was a whaler and a goldminer in the Ovens Valley before returning to his parents' property near Camden. On 3 March 1858 he married Flora McKinnon. He entered into an auctioneering partnership with Joseph Butler in 1867, which he ran alone from 1877. It continues today as William Inglis and Sons. He conducted his business between Castlereagh and Pitt streets, where he had a "horse bazaar". He ran unsuccessfully for the New South Wales Legislative Assembly in 1889 as a Protectionist candidate for Balmain. A banquet was given in his honour in 1895. James Bartholomew Cummings (14 November 1927 – 30 August 2015), also known by his initials J. B. Cummings, was one of the most successful Australian racehorse trainers. Redzel (foaled 19 September 2012) is an Australian thoroughbred racehorse. He races in the Triple Crown Syndicate silks for a group of owners who bought into the gelding as a yearling. Redzel is known around the stables as Richie after the New Zealand Rugby player, Richie McCaw. Snowden Racing foreman, Lindy Wharekura is originally from New Zealand and came up with the name "after the greatest ever Captain, of the greatest ever team". Classique Legend (foaled 8 September 2015) is an Australian bred thoroughbred racehorse that is most notable for winning the 2020 running of The Everest. Background Classique Legend was sold for A$400,000 at the 2017 Inglis Classic Yearling sale. He was purchased for Hong Kong businessman Mr Bon Ho. Racing career Classique Legend won at his race debut as a three-year-old on the 20 February 2019 at Randwick. Chautauqua (foaled 20 September 2010) is a former and now retired champion Australian racehorse. He was bred as a thoroughbred, which is the superior breed for a racehorse. Chautauqua's grey colouring saw him receive the nickname “The Grey Flash”. Chautauqua raced 32 times, winning 6 group one races and earning AU$8,821,935 in prize money. This includes three successive Group 1 TJ Smith Stakes wins and a Group 1 Chairman's Sprint Prize (Hong Kong) win.
