William Gillis (businessman)
William Gillis ( – July 18, 1869), sometimes spelt Gilliss, was an American fur trader, real estate developer, and pioneer, who was one of the original founders of Kansas City, Missouri. Biography Gillis was born in Somerset County, Maryland to Thomas Gilliss and Nelly Cannon, but ran away in 1806 at age 14 by ship and moved to Cincinnati. While there, he started a carpentry business and befriended William Henry Harrison. Gillis served in the military, and fought in the Battle of Tippecanoe and the War of 1812. After the war, Gillis moved to Kaskaskia, Illinois with his brother and guardian, John. While there, he met Pierre Menard, ended his carpentry, and began trading. He was adopted into the Delaware Tribe of Indians in 1819. In 1820, he became the head of the Menard & Valle trading company, which he used to trade with other Native American tribes. Somerset County, Maryland
Somerset County is the southernmost county in the U.S. state of Maryland. As of the 2020 census, the population was 24,620, making it the second-least populous county in Maryland. The county seat is Princess Anne. The county was named for Mary, Lady Somerset, the wife of Sir John Somerset and daughter of Thomas Arundell, 1st Baron Arundell of Wardour (c. 1560–1639). She was also the sister of Anne Calvert, Baroness Baltimore (1615–1649), who later lent her name to Anne Arundel County, which was erected in 1650 as the Province of Maryland's third county. Find a Grave is a website that allows the public to search and add to an online database of cemetery records. It is owned by Ancestry.com. Its stated mission is "to help people from all over the world work together to find, record and present final disposition information as a virtual cemetery experience." Volunteers can create memorials, upload photos of grave markers or deceased persons, transcribe photos of headstones, and more. , the site claimed more than 210 million memorials. History The site was created in 1995 by Salt Lake City resident Jim Tipton (born in Alma, Michigan) to support his hobby of visiting the burial sites of celebrities. He later added an online forum. The ''Kansas City Journal-Post'' was a newspaper in Kansas City, Missouri, from 1854 to 1942. It was the oldest newspaper in the city when it went out of business. It started as a weekly, ''The Kansas City Enterprise,'' on September 23, 1854, a year after the city's founding and shortly after ''The Public Ledger'' went out of business. Kansas City's first mayor, William S. Gregory, and future mayors Milton J. Payne and E.
