William Finlay
William Thomas Finlay (July 12, 1853 – May 9, 1914) was a merchant, politician and cabinet minister in Alberta and Northwest Territories, Canada. Finlay served as the second mayor of Medicine Hat, represented the electoral district of Medicine Hat in the Legislative Assembly of Alberta, and served in the Cabinet of Alexander Cameron Rutherford as Alberta's first Minister of Agriculture and Provincial Secretary from 1905 to 1909. Early life Finlay was born in Lisburn, Ireland on July 12, 1853, to John Finlay and Christina Brownlee. He was educated at the Royal Belfast Academical Institution and worked in the wholesale grocery business before moving to Montreal, Quebec in 1873. Finlay continued to move around, living in Toronto and in and eventually Winnipeg, working as a travelling salesman for the Northwest Lumber Company in 1883 and later his own firm Finlay and Company. William Finlay (mayor)
William Finlay (22 February 1840 18 June 1886) was a policeman and the first mayor of Albany in the Great Southern region of Western Australia. Parents Finlay's parents were William and Marjory Finlay. His father, William Finlay (5 June 1807 11 June 1890) was born in Dundee, Scotland in 1807. He served in the army and rose to the rank of sergeant. William Jr. was born in 1840 in Ireland. Early life The Finlays, both parents and three children, arrived in Western Australia aboard the convict ship '' Scindian'' in 1850 and initially settled at Freshwater Bay. Another five children were born in Western Australia over the next few years. Police Finlay joined the police force in 1858; he served as a constable in Albany in 1864, moving to Williams in 1869, then to York in 1873 and then to Geraldton in 1874. William Finlay, 2nd Viscount Finlay
William Finlay, 2nd Viscount Finlay, (15 October 1875 – 30 June 1945) was a British judge and peer who served as a Lord Justice of Appeal from 1938 to 1945. The son of Lord Chancellor Finlay, William Finlay was educated at Eton and Trinity College, Cambridge, before being called to the English bar in 1901. He became a King's Counsel in 1914, a High Court judge in 1924, and a Lord Justice of Appeal in 1938. Finlay's rapid rise to professional prominence was accompanied by accusations of nepotism, though his competence was not questioned. In 1929, he inherited his father's peerages, becoming the second and last Viscount Finlay. In addition to his legal work, Finlay also played an important role in economic warfare against Germany during both World Wars, and was responsible for two influential, if much criticised, reports on the English legal aid system. William Henry Finlay (FRAS) (17 June 1849, in Liverpool – 7 December 1924, in Grahamstown, South Africa) was a South African astronomer. He was First Assistant at the Cape Observatory from 1873 to 1898 under Edward James Stone. He discovered the periodic comet 15P/Finlay. Earlier, he was one of the first to spot the "Great Comet of 1882" (C/1882 R1). The first telegraphic determinations of longitude along the western coast of Africa were made by Finlay and T. F. Pullen. William Morris Finlay (9 August 1926 – 4 September 2014) was a Scottish professional football player and coach. Career Born in Auchterderran, Finlay played as a centre half for Bowhill Rovers, East Fife, Clyde and Raith Rovers, making a total of 476 appearances in the Scottish Football League.
