William Charles (cartoonist)
William Charles (1776–1820) was a Scottish-born engraver who emigrated to the United States and is now known best for his political cartoons, especially "The Hartford Convention or LEAP NO LEAP", perhaps the most widely printed illustration regarding that historic subject. He is also notable for being a pioneer in comics. Life and career He was born in Edinburgh but little is known about his early life and training. Charles had published political caricatures in Edinburgh and London before immigrating to America. William Charles (March 5, 1831 – May 21, 1903) was a British Columbia Coast, Pacific coast pioneer, Hudson's Bay Company Factor (agent), factor, and a prominent figure in the early history of British Columbia. Life Born in Edinburgh, Scotland, the son of John Charles (1805–1882), one of the early factors of the Hudson's Bay Company, and Jane Auld, the daughter of fur trader William Auld. He was educated at Hill Street School and University of Edinburgh. The family moved to 42 Inverleith Row (then a new villa) in the late 1840s. In May 1852 he travelled between Liverpool and New York (state), New York on the SS Great Britain. He came to the Pacific coast of Canada from Edinburgh by way of Panama in 1852, and was for a time employed by Breck & Ogden of Portland, Oregon. In June 1853, he joined the HBC at Fort Vancouver (Vancouver, Wash.) as an apprentice clerk. William Peter Charles Ospreay (born 7 May 1993) is an English professional wrestler who is currently signed to New Japan Pro-Wrestling (NJPW), where he is the current IWGP United States Heavyweight Champion in his first reign and leader of the United Empire stable. He also wrestles for NJPW's United Kingdom based partner promotion Revolution Pro Wrestling (RevPro), where he is a former and longest reigning Undisputed British Heavyweight Champion.
