William C. Thompson (New York Judge)
William Colridge Thompson Sr. (October 26, 1924 – December 24, 2018) was a New York State Senator and justice of the New York Supreme Court, Appellate Division. Biography He was born on October 26, 1924, in New York City. He graduated from Brooklyn College, and in 1954 from Brooklyn Law School. Thompson served in the United States Army during World War II. He was a member of the New York State Senate from 1965 to 1968, sitting in the 175th New York State Legislature, 175th, 176th New York State Legislature, 176th and 177th New York State Legislatures. He was a Democratic Party (United States), Democrat. He was Brooklyn's first African-American State Senator. He was a member of the New York City Council from 1969 to 1973. New York State Senator
The New York State Senate is the upper house of the New York State Legislature; the New York State Assembly is its lower house. Its members are elected to two-year terms; there are no term limits. There are 63 seats in the Senate. Partisan composition The New York State Senate was dominated by the Republican Party for much of the 20th century. Between World War II and the turn of the 21st century, the Democratic Party only controlled the upper house for one year. The Democrats took control of the Senate following the 1964 elections; however, the Republicans quickly regained a Senate majority in special elections later that year. By 2018, the State Senate was the last Republican-controlled body in New York government.
