William Black (Ontario Politician)
William David Black (October 17, 1867 – October 24, 1944) was speaker of the Legislature of Ontario in 1927-1929 and served as Conservative MLA for Addington from 1911 to 1943. He was born in Dundas County, Ontario, the son of William Black. After leaving the family farm, Black worked as a trackman for the Canadian Pacific Railway. In 1892, he married Georgia R. Griffith. Black moved to Parham in 1894, where he operated a general store and worked as a contractor. He was also involved in lumbering and contracting in the Temagami region. William Henry Black
William Henry Black (7 May 1808 – 12 April 1872) was a Victorian antiquarian and Seventh-Day Baptist leader. During his lifetime, he was well known in London antiquarian and literary circles for his talent for paleography and archiving. He was the member of many historical societies, and the founder of three more. He published numerous articles and books, during his lifetime, with more published posthumously. Black was lesser known, but equally regarded, for his prominence in London Seventh-Day Baptist circles, leading a small congregation in London, which never held more than twenty people. This circle was the subject of a newspaper article in 1869, where the reporter wrote of the contrast between the dilapidated building the services were held in, and their leader, Black, who appeared as "a profound scholar and most courteous gentleman". William Bullick Black KC (22 September 1879 – 11 March 1967) was an Irish judge and barrister who served as a Judge of the Supreme Court from 1942 to 1951. Early life and education Black was born in Holywood, County Down, in 1879. Black's father, James, was a Methodist minister. He was educated at Methodist College Belfast and later at Trinity College Dublin. Career Black attended the King's Inns, Dublin, where he qualified as a barrister. At King's Inns he won a number of debating and oratorical prizes before he was called to the Bar in 1901. Black was a campaigner for Sinn Féin before later supporting Fianna Fáil. In 1942, he was made a judge of the Supreme Court of Ireland and served until 1951. William Black, (1749–1829) was an Irish physician and writer on medicine. He graduated MD at Leyden in 1772, and was made LRCP in 1787. He practised in London, and was one of the first English-speaking physicians who published (1783) statistics of diseases and mortality. Life William Black was born in Ireland in 1749; studied medicine, according to Munk, at Leyden, and took his degree as MD there on 20 March 1772 with an inaugural dissertation ''De diagnosi, prognosi, et causis mortis in febribus''. He was admitted a Licentiate of the College of Physicians on 2 April 1787, and afterwards practised in London, residing in Piccadilly. He appears to have retired from practice before his death. He died at Hammersmith in December 1829, in his eightieth year. Wilhelmus "Willem" Hendrikus Petrus Johannes de Zwart (16 May 1862 The Hague – 11 December 1931 The Hague) was a Dutch painter, engraver, and watercolorist with many connections to the Hague School and later associated with the Amsterdam Impressionism movement. Biography Willem de Zwart was born in The Hague on 16 May 1862, the eldest of eight children. His youngest brother, Pieter, would also become a painter. His father painted carriages for a living, and in 1875 the fourteen-year-old Willem was apprenticed to a carriage maker to learn the same trade. In his spare time, he copied prints he found in magazines, and a year later he enrolled in the evening class at the Royal Academy of Visual Art in The Hague. William Patton Black Jr. (September 17, 1926 – October 21, 1965) was an American musician and bandleader who is noted as one of the pioneers of rock and roll. He played in Elvis Presley's early trio. Black later formed Bill Black's Combo. Early life and career William Patton Black Jr. was born on September 17, 1926, in Memphis, Tennessee, to a motorman for the Memphis Street Railway Co. He was the oldest of nine children. His father played popular songs on the banjo and fiddle to entertain the family. Black learned to play music at the age of 14 on an instrument made by his father—a cigar box with a board nailed to it and strings attached. At the age of sixteen, Black was performing "honky-tonk" music on acoustic guitar in local bars. During World War II, Black was stationed with the U.S. Army at Fort Lee in Virginia. William David Black (February 23, 1952 – December 10, 2003) was an American pianist and teacher. Biography He was born in Dallas, Texas. He had a sister, Beverley, and a brother, the pianist, conductor and composer Robert Black. He studied at Oberlin College; with Rosina Lhévinne and Beveridge Webster at the Juilliard School in New York, earning a master's degree in 1976 and a doctorate in 1979; and at the Mozarteum in Salzburg, Austria. He gave recitals and concerts at such venues in the United States as the Kennedy Center, Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center, and in many overseas countries. He was a longtime consulting editor for ''Keyboard Classics/Piano Today''. He joined the piano department at the University of Cincinnati's College-Conservatory of Music in 1987.
