''Wilhelm Pieck – Das Leben unseres Präsidenten'' (Wilhelm Pieck: the Life of Our President) is a 1952 East German documentary film directed by Andrew Thorndike about the life of GDR President Wilhelm Pieck. It opened on 2 January 1952 in the cinemas of East Germany and East Berlin. The film consists mainly of still images illustrating Pieck's life and related German history. There are only a few motion picture sequences, for example Lenin's funeral and the post-1945 period. Reception According to '' Neues Deutschland'', run by the Socialist Unity Party of Germany, the film had "overwhelming success" and the cinemas were sold out. ''Der Spiegel'' commented that the film "covered the last 50 years of Marxist rule". Andrew Thorndike
Andrew Thorndike (30 August 1909 – 14 December 1979) was a German documentary film director. He directed 16 films between 1949 and 1977. His 1950 documentary, '' Der Weg nach oben'', won the Best Documentary Film at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival in 1951. He was a member of the jury at the 5th Moscow International Film Festival. At the 11th Moscow International Film Festival in 1979, he was awarded the Honorable Prize for his contribution to cinema. Background Thorndike was related to a ''Mayflower'' family who had settled in the United States. He grew up in a wealthy family on an estate in Senzig, outside of Berlin, the son of an advertising executive. Thorndike's father was on the board of Krupp. He received commercial training before becoming an employee of Ufa in 1931. Thorndike quickly became head of the firm's advertising film division. East German Films
This is a list, in year order, of the most notable films produced in the Soviet Occupation Zone of Germany and the socialist German Democratic Republic (GDR, East Germany) from 1945 until German Reunification in October 1990. The state owned East German film company DEFA produced about 800 feature films between 1946 and 1992. Besides DEFA, the state broadcaster DFF and the Deutsche Hochschule für Filmkunst (now the Filmuniversität Babelsberg) were the only other organizations in the GDR that produced feature films for cinematic release, although far fewer than DEFA. DEFA also produced about 750 animated movies and more than 2500 documentaries and short films. Otto Winzer (3 April 1902 – 3 March 1975) was an East German diplomat who served as East Germany's Minister of Foreign Affairs from 1965 to 1975. Biography Winzer was born in Berlin in 1902. He was a son of worker. Otto Winzer learned the typesetter craft. In 1919, he became a member of the Communist Party of Germany. Then he became the head of Communist Youth publication. He was involved in underground activities against Adolf Hitler's regime from 1933 to 1935. In 1935, Winzer went to the Soviet Union, and he stayed there until the end of World War II. During World War II, he used the code name Lorenz. He returned from exile in the Soviet Union as part of the Ulbricht Group, charged with setting up the Soviet Military Administration in Germany after World War II in April 1945. ''Neues Deutschland'' (''nd''; en, New Germany, sometimes stylized in lowercase letters) is a left-wing German daily newspaper, headquartered in Berlin.
