Ferdinand Johann Wiedemann ( in Hapsal (now Haapsalu) – in Saint Petersburg) was an Estonian linguist who researched Uralic languages, mostly Estonian. Wiedemann was also a botanist. Huno Rätsep
Huno Rätsep (born 28 December 1927 in Tartu) is an Estonian linguist. In 1951 he graduated from Tartu State University. Since 1953 he has taught at the University of Tartu, since 1977, a professor. His main fields of research have been structural linguistics and generative grammar, grammar of Estonian language. Since 1981 he is a member of Estonian Academy of Sciences. 1982-1982 he was the chairperson of Mother Tongue Society. Mati Erelt
Mati Erelt (born 12 March 1941) is an Estonian linguist. Mati Erelt was born in Tallinn. In 1965 he graduated from the University of Tartu with a degree in Estonian language and literature. He defended his doctoral dissertation there in 1981. From 1989 until 1991 he was a professor at Tallinn Pedagogical Institute (now, Tallinn University). From 1991 to 1995 he was a visiting professor at the Chair of Finno-Ugric Languages at the University of Helsinki, and from 1995 to 2006. he was a professor at the Chair of Estonian at the University of Tartu. He is currently Professor Emeritus at the University of Tartu and continues to work as a Senior Research Fellow. From 1997 until 2006 he was the chairman of Mother Tongue Society. He is married to linguist Tiiu Erelt. Kristiina Ross
Kristiina Ross (born on 3 June 1955 in Tallinn) is an Estonian linguist and translator. In 1978 she graduated from Tartu State University in Estonian philology. Since 1978 she is working at Estonian Language Institute. She has also worked at Estonian Humanitarian Institute. Her main fields of research have been the grammar of Estonian language and other Finnic languages, Bible translations into Estonian. Her father was the writer Jaan Kross. Haldur Õim (born 22 January 1942 in Helme Parish (now Tõrva Parish)) is an Estonian linguist. In 1965 he graduated from Tartu State University in Estonian philology. Since 1969 he has taught at the Tartu of Tartu (since 1992, a professor). From 1981 until 1984, he taught Estonian language at the University of Helsinki. His main fields of research have been theoretical linguistics, computational linguistics, semantics, pragmatics. Since 1994 he is a member of Estonian Academy of Sciences. Helju Vals (1957-1960 Helju Heuer, pseudonyms Hille Sarem, Krista Varju; 1 March 1929 Tartu – 31 January 2011) was an Estonian language editor, journalist. Valdek Pall (30 June 1927 Laius-Tähkvere Parish, Tartu County – 17 April 2013) was an Estonian linguist. In 1952 he graduated from University of Tartu, Tartu State University. 1957–1992 he worked at Estonian SSR Academy of Sciences' Language and Literature Institute. His main fields of research were Estonian toponyms, Mordvinic languages. He also managed and directed investigations of Estonian dialects. Eduard Vääri (26 June 1926 Lapetukme, Valguta Parish – 17 May 2005) was an Estonian linguist. In 1950 he graduated from Tartu University. Since 1951 he taught at Tartu University, since 1978 a professor. 1976-1978 he taught Estonian language at Helsinki University.
