Wheelchair Rugby At The 2020 Summer Paralympics
The Wheelchair rugby tournament at the 2020 Summer Paralympics in Tokyo, Japan was the seventh edition of Wheelchair rugby as a Paralympic sport since its debut as a demonstration sport at the 1996 Summer Paralympics in Atlanta. The competition was hosted at the Yoyogi National Stadium and was held from 25 to 29 August 2021. Eight teams competed in the competition which included the debutant of Denmark at the Paralympics. The eight teams were separated into two groups of four with the top two teams from each group qualifying through to the semi-finals while the bottom two played off in the fifth and seventh place match respectively. The remaining four teams then played-off in two semi-finals with the winners going through to the gold medal play-off while the losers met in the bronze-medal match. Yoyogi National Stadium
Yoyogi National Gymnasium, officially is an indoor arena located at Yoyogi Park in Shibuya, Tokyo, Japan, which is famous for its suspension roof design. It was designed by Kenzo Tange and built between 1961 and 1964 to house swimming and diving events in the 1964 Summer Olympics. A separate annex was used for the basketball competition at those same games. It will also host handball competitions at the 2020 Summer Olympics. The design inspired Frei Otto's arena designs for the Olympic Stadium in Munich. The arena holds 13,291 people (9,079 stand seats, 4,124 arena seats and 88 "royal box" seats) and is now primarily used for ice hockey, futsal and basketball. The 2019 Parapan American Games ( es, Juegos Parapanamericanos de 2019, links=no), officially the VI Pan American Games and commonly known as the Lima 2019 ParaPan-Am Games, was an international multi-sport event for athletes with disabilities, celebrated in the tradition of the Parapan American Games as governed by the Americas Paralympic Committee, which was held from August 23 to September 1, 2019 in Lima, Peru. Bidding process Four bids were submitted for the 2019 Pan and Parapan American Games, and they were officially announced on February 1, 2013. These were Lima in Peru, Santiago in Chile, Ciudad Bolívar in Venezuela and La Punta in Argentina. Chad Cohn (born August 12, 1983) is an American Paralympic wheelchair rugby player from Tucson, Arizona. Chuck Aoki also known as Charles Aoki (born 7 March 1991) is an American Paralympic wheelchair rugby player and a former wheelchair basketball player who currently plays for the United States national wheelchair rugby team. He initially pursued his career in wheelchair basketball before permanently switching to wheelchair rugby. He has represented United States at the Paralympics in 2012, 2016 and 2020. Jack Dalziel Smith (born 19 June 1991) in Stockton-on-Tees is a British wheelchair rugby athlete and member of the Great Britain national wheelchair rugby team where the team won the final on the 29th August 2021 and received gold medals. He was chosen to represent Great Britain at the 2020 Summer Paralympics in Tokyo. Biography In 2008, at age 16, Jack was diagnosed with Hodgkin Lymphoma. A few weeks after this diagnosis, while playing rugby for Billingham RUFC he was injured in a ruck incident. Jack sustained a fracture-dislocation of several vertebrae and spinal cord compression, which resulted in paralysis from the chest down. He had spinal surgery at North Tees Hospital and spent three months’ rehab at James Cook University Hospital spinal unit. Aaron Phipps
Aaron David Phipps (born 7 April 1983) is a British wheelchair rugby player and gold medal-winning paralympian. He is part of the Great Britain national wheelchair rugby team and competed in Wheelchair rugby at the 2012 Summer Paralympics in London and in at the 2020 Tokyo Paralympics where the team won the gold medal final on the 29th August 2021. Biography On 7 January 1999 Aaron contracted Meningitis C. and Meningococcal sepsis. As a result of this illness Aaron was in a controlled coma for 2 weeks. Following this, in March, it was required that his legs and most of his fingers be amputated. In total Aaron spent a year in hospital, receiving treatment and recovering. In 2007 Aaron began to get involved in wheelchair races and raised money for a Meningitis charity by completing a 10 km race in Totton. Kylie Grimes
Kylie Grimes (born 7 December 1987 in Aldershot, Hampshire) is a British para-athlete. She is one of two women, along with Bieke Ketelbuters, who competed on wheelchair rugby teams at the 2012 Summer Paralympics. She was part of the GB team to win their first ever gold in the event, at the 2020 Summer Paralympics in Tokyo, Japan, beating the USA 54–49. In doing so she became the first woman of any country to win a Paralympic gold medal in the sport. Early life Grimes became disabled after a diving accident at a friend's swimming pool. She attempted to sue over the matter but was unsuccessful. She trains 12 hours a week. She considers herself positive and was surprised to be named to the British team. Ayaz Mazeed Bhuta (born 17 April 1989) is a British Paralympic wheelchair rugby player and a former wheelchair basketball player who currently plays for the Great Britain national wheelchair rugby team. He has represented Great Britain at the Paralympics in 2016 and 2020. Biography Ayaz was born with a rare genetic disorder called Roberts Syndrome which affects the growth of bones in arms and legs.
