Wheelchair Rugby At The 2012 Summer Paralympics
Wheelchair rugby at the 2012 Summer Paralympics was held in the Basketball Arena, London from 5 September to 9 September. There was one event where 8 teams competed. Though a mixed gender event the vast majority of competitors at the games were male. Qualification A NPC may enter one team. The host country directly qualified, as it had a rank on the IWRF Wheelchair Rugby World Ranking List on 31 January 2012. Two qualification spots went to the top two NPCs on the ranking list that were not otherwise qualified. Tournament The tournament took place from 5 to 9 September at the Basketball Arena in Olympic Park. It consisted of an initial round-robin group stage of two groups of four teams, followed by a fifth to eighth place playoff round for the bottom two from each group. Basketball Arena (London)
The Basketball Arena for the 2012 Summer Olympics and the 2012 Summer Paralympics was located in the Olympic Park in Stratford, London. The arena was designed to be fully recyclable, and was dismantled in January 2013, the seating was sold to Barnet owner Tony Kleanthous to be used in the construction of The Hive Stadium. History London's Olympic bid proposed that there would be four arenas in the Olympic Park, but the revised masterplan published in 2006 reduced this to three, with the volleyball matches being moved to Earls Court Exhibition Centre. The fencing arena was also cancelled, and the fencing took place at ExCeL. The Basketball Arena had 12,000 seats for Olympic basketball and the semi-finals and finals of Olympic handball, and 10,000 for Paralympic wheelchair basketball and wheelchair rugby. Ben Newton, (born 14 February 1988) is a wheelchair rugby player. He was selected to represent Australia at the 2012 Summer Paralympics in wheelchair rugby. Personal life Benaiah Thomas Newton was born on 14 February 1988 in Sydney, New South Wales. When he was two and a half years old, he was in a car accident that left him an incomplete quadriplegic. He attended Tyalla Public School and Orara High School, and in 2010 graduated from Southern Cross University with a Bachelor of Psychology with Honours (1st class). Brad Dubberley (born 28 June 1981) is an Australian Paralympic wheelchair rugby Head Coach and former athlete. Cody Meakin, (born 27 December 1989) is a wheelchair rugby player. He was selected to represent Australia at the 2012 Summer Paralympics in wheelchair rugby. Personal Cody Meakin was born on 27 December 1989 in Darwin, Northern Territory. Growing up, he played rugby union for the Casuarina Cougars and Australian rules football with the Waratahs under-14 side.
