Wheelchair Curling At The 2014 Winter Paralympics
The wheelchair curling competition of the 2014 Winter Paralympics was held from 8 to 15 March 2014 at the Ice Cube Curling Center in Sochi, Russia. Ten mixed teams competed. Qualification Qualification for the 2014 Paralympics was based on rankings in the 2011, 2012, and 2013 World Wheelchair Curling Championships. The qualification points are allotted based on the nations' final rankings at the World Championships. The points are distributed as shown in the table below. The nine countries with the most points were to qualify for the Sochi Games, while the tenth slot was reserved for the host country, Russia. Because the Russian team placed within the top nine point-scorers, the tenth slot was given to the tenth-ranked team, Finland. Ice Cube Curling Center
The Ice Cube Curling Center ( rus, Керлинговый Центр Ледяной куб) is a 3,000-seat multi-purpose arena in Sochi, Russia, that opened in 2012. It is a component of the Sochi Olympic Park. It hosted all the curling events at the 2014 Winter Olympics and the wheelchair curling events at the 2014 Winter Paralympics. It cost $14.0 million to build the venue, including the temporary works for the Olympics and Paralympics. It opened in 2012. After the 2014 games, it will remain a sports arena. The venue is a portable venue, designed so that it could possibly be re-located after the end of the games. Mark Ideson
Mark Ideson (born April 10, 1976, in Parry Sound, Ontario) is a Canadian wheelchair curler who competed in the 2014 Winter Paralympic Games in Sochi and won gold. He is married and has two children. He now resides in London, Ontario. In 2007, the helicopter he was piloting crashed into a field near Cambridge, Ontario and he now lives with quadriplegia. He played hockey and golf before he was disabled. Personal Ideson is married and has two children, a 17-year-old daughter, Brooklyn, and a 13-year-old son, Myles. He went to the University of Western Ontario. He studied environmental Science there, where he met his future wife, Lara. He was also a former Mustangs Cheerleader. After graduating university, he became a helicopter pilot and was introduced to wheelchair curling in 2010 at the age of 33.
