Westmead, New South Wales
Westmead is a suburb in Sydney, in the state of New South Wales, Australia. Westmead is located 26 kilometres west of the Sydney central business district in the local government area of Cumberland Council and is part of the Greater Western Sydney region. Geography Westmead is bounded by the Parramatta River, Toongabbie Creek and Finlayson Creek in the north. On the east it is bounded by Parramatta Park, the Parramatta Golf Club, Amos Street and Good Street. The southern boundary is the Great Western Highway. The western boundary is Bridge Road, the railway line and Finlayson Creek. History With the British settlement of Parramatta, Westmead was originally part of the domain of Government House. What is left of this domain, including Government House, form Parramatta Park. The name Westmead came into use when the governor's domain was first subdivided in 1859. Westmead Hospital is a major tertiary hospital in Sydney, Australia. Opened on 10 November 1978, the 975-bed hospital forms part of the Western Sydney Local Health District, and is a teaching hospital of Sydney Medical School at the University of Sydney. The hospital serves a population of 1.85m people and is located on one of the largest health and hospital campuses in Australia. In 2016/17, Westmead Hospital provided more than 1.5m occasions of care to outpatients, in addition to approximately 107,000 inpatients. Annually, there are over 21,000 medical operations, almost 5,800 births, and more than 75,000 presentations to emergency department. Westmead Railway Station
Westmead railway station is located on the Main Western line, serving the Sydney suburb of Westmead. It is served by Sydney Trains T1 Western Line and T5 Cumberland Line services and NSW TrainLink Blue Mountains Line services. History Westmead station opened in March 1883. To the east of the station lies a dive through which one of the eastbound tracks passes. This was opened in 1986 as part of the quadruplication of the Main Western line between Westmead and Granville. It was necessary because west of Westmead the two westbound tracks run adjacent to one another as do the two eastbound tracks. East of Westmead, the lines are configured to run as West/East/West/East. Between 1922 and 1932, the Rogans Hill line branched from the Main Western line immediately to the west of Westmead station.
