West Virginia High School Hockey
Ice hockey is a fairly new high school sport in the state of West Virginia. Eight high schools field teams, all but two (Vipers and Charleston) are located in the northern portion of the state, which compete in the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Hockey League. Morgantown High School and University High School combine during the regular season to form one team and during state championship representing Morgantown High School, University High School, and all other schools in the Morgantown area. In 2016 the Eastern Panhandle created a team to allow their section of the state to have representation in West Virginia hockey. In 2019 Charleston formed their High School co-op team called the Charleston Chiefs, paying homage to the original youth hockey program in Charleston. Ice Hockey
Ice hockey (or simply hockey) is a team sport played on ice skates, usually on an ice skating rink with lines and markings specific to the sport. It belongs to a family of sports called hockey. In ice hockey, two opposing teams use ice hockey sticks to control, advance and shoot a closed, vulcanized, rubber disc called a " puck" into the other team's goal. Each goal is worth one point. High School
A secondary school describes an institution that provides secondary education and also usually includes the building where this takes place. Pennsylvania High School Hockey
Teams from 150 high schools competed as varsity ice hockey teams in Western and Eastern Pennsylvania. Unlike many other high school sport in Pennsylvania, hockey is not run under Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association umbrella. However, Pennsylvania's high school ice hockey is sanctioned by USA Hockey and varsity-level programs are marginally overseen by the NHL Pittsburgh Penguins and Philadelphia Flyers organizations through the Penguins Cup and the Flyers Cup. However although it is considered a club it is still a part of the High School and is affiliated with the school. Format Varsity teams are divided into four divisions, AAA, AA, A, and B (Open). Linsly School
The Linsly School, formerly known as the Linsly Military Institute, is a boarding and day school located in Wheeling, West Virginia. It was founded in 1814 by Noah Linsly and chartered by the State of Virginia in the same year. The school is the oldest preparatory school west of the Alleghenies. It was originally known as the Lancastrian Academy. History In 1861, the school adopted the dress and discipline of an all-boys military school. The Linsly Institute building (erected 1858) in Wheeling, served as the state's first capitol building from statehood in 1863 until March 28, 1870, when the capital transferred to Charleston. Morgantown High School
Morgantown High School is a public high school in Morgantown, West Virginia, United States. It is one of three secondary schools in the Monongalia County School District. Athletic teams compete as the Morgantown Mohigans in the West Virginia Secondary School Activities Commission as a member of the Ohio Valley Athletic Conference. Central Catholic High School is a parochial, Roman Catholic high school in Wheeling, West Virginia. It is part of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Wheeling-Charleston.
