West Virginia Gubernatorial Election, 1996
The 1996 West Virginia gubernatorial election took place on November 5, 1996 to elect the Governor of West Virginia. Republican Cecil Underwood, who had previously been the Governor of West Virginia from 1957 to 1961, defeated Democratic State Senator Charlotte Pritt. Concurrently, the state voted the opposite way federally, choosing Democratic U.S. Presidential nominee, incumbent Bill Clinton over Republican nominee Bob Dole in the Presidential election that year. Pritt was the first woman to secure the West Virginia gubernatorial nomination of either of the two major political parties. This was the last election in which a Republican was elected Governor of West Virginia until 2020. James Conley Justice II (born April 27, 1951) is an American businessman and politician who has served as the 36th governor of West Virginia since 2017. Justice had a net worth of $1.2 billion in September 2018, making him the wealthiest person in West Virginia, though it has declined to $513.3 million as of October 2021. He inherited a coal mining business from his father and built a business empire with over 94 companies, including the Greenbrier, a luxury resort in White Sulphur Springs. In 2015, Justice announced his candidacy for governor in the 2016 West Virginia gubernatorial election. United States gubernatorial elections were held on November 5, 1996, in 11 states and two territories. Going into the elections, seven of the seats were held by Democrats and four by Republicans. West Virginia Republican Party
The West Virginia Republican Party is the affiliate of the United States Republican Party in West Virginia. Mark Harris is the party chair. It is currently the dominant party in the state, controlling all three of West Virginia's U.S. House seats, one of the U.S. Senate seats, both houses of the state legislature, and the governorship. History The Republican Party arose in 1854. The Democratic Party was an advocate of slavery and the Republican Party opposed it. There was a lot of turmoil in Virginia with the rise of the Republican Party. When the American Civil War reached Western Virginia, there was a rise in violence against those who opposed slavery. In May 1861, people traveled to Richmond, Virginia, to vote on secession of the state. Many Republicans had to leave the city because of the threats. David McKinley
David Bennett McKinley (born March 28, 1947) is an American businessman and politician who has served as the U.S. representative for since 2011. A member of the Republican Party, McKinley was a member of the West Virginia House of Delegates from 1980 to 1994, and chaired the West Virginia Republican Party from 1990 to 1994. He is the dean of West Virginia's House delegation. McKinley is generally considered a moderate Republican. Jon Andrew McBride (born August 14, 1943), is a retired NASA astronaut and American naval officer. Over the course of his career with the United States Navy, McBride served as an aviator, a fighter pilot, a test pilot, and an aeronautical engineer. Joseph Manchin III (born August 24, 1947) is an American politician and businessman serving as the senior United States senator from West Virginia, a seat he has held since 2010. A member of the Democratic Party, Manchin was the 34th governor of West Virginia from 2005 to 2010 and the 27th secretary of state of West Virginia from 2001 to 2005. After becoming a senator in 2010, he became the state's senior U.S. senator when Jay Rockefeller retired in 2015. Before entering politics, Manchin helped found and was the president of Enersystems, a coal brokerage company his family owns and operates. The 1992 West Virginia gubernatorial election took place on November 7, 1992. Incumbent Democratic Governor Gaston Caperton won re-election by defeating former Republican U.S. Representative Cleve Benedict and Democratic State Senator Charlotte Pritt, who ran as an independent write-in candidate after losing to Caperton in the Democratic primary election. Benedict had defeated Vernon Criss for his party's nomination, this election being the first time since 1960 that the Republicans had nominated someone other than Arch A. Moore or Cecil H. Underwood. The 2016 West Virginia gubernatorial election took place on November 8, 2016, to elect the Governor of West Virginia, concurrently with the 2016 U.S. presidential election, as well as elections to the United States Senate in other states and elections to the United States House of Representatives and various state and local elections.
