Wenche Jacobsen
Wenche Jacobsen (born 28 July 1954) is a Norwegian orienteering competitor who competed internationally. Her achievements included winning a bronze medal at the world championships in 1978, and she was part of the Norwegian relay team at the world championships in 1976 and 1978, both times placing fourth. Career International Jacobsen competed at the 1976 World Orienteering Championships in Aviemore, where she placed sixth in the individual course. She was also part of the Norwegian relay team, which placed fourth. She won a bronze medal in the individual event at the 1978 World Orienteering Championships in Kongsberg, behind Anne Berit Eid and Liisa Veijalainen. Orienteering
Orienteering is a group of sports that require navigational skills using a map and compass to navigate from point to point in diverse and usually unfamiliar terrain whilst moving at speed. Participants are given a topographical map, usually a specially prepared orienteering map, which they use to find control points. Originally a training exercise in land navigation for military officers, orienteering has developed many variations. Among these, the oldest and the most popular is foot orienteering. For the purposes of this article, foot orienteering serves as a point of departure for discussion of all other variations, but almost any sport that involves racing against a clock and requires navigation with a map is a type of orienteering. World Orienteering Championships
The World Orienteering Championships (or WOC for short) is an annual orienteering event organized by the International Orienteering Federation. The first World Championships was held in Fiskars, Finland in 1966. They were held biennially up to 2003 (with the exception of 1978 and 1979). Since 2003, competitions have been held annually. Participating nations have to be members of the International Orienteering Federation (IOF). Originally, there were only two competitions: an individual race and a relay. In 1991, a short distance race (roughly 20–25 minutes) was added and a sprint race was added in 2001. The middle distance (roughly 30–35 minutes) replaced the short distance in 2003. Aviemore
Aviemore (; gd, An Aghaidh Mhòr ) is a town and tourist resort, situated within the Cairngorms National Park in the Highlands of Scotland. It is in the Badenoch and Strathspey committee area, within the Highland council area. The town is popular for skiing and other winter sports, and for hill-walking in the Cairngorm Mountains. International Orienteering Federation
The International Orienteering Federation (IOF) is the international governing body of the sport of orienteering. The IOF head office is located in Karlstad, Sweden. The IOF governs four orienteering disciplines: foot orienteering, mountain bike orienteering, ski orienteering, and trail orienteering. After the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine, the International Orienteering Federation suspended the membership of the Russian Orienteering Federation. Anne Berit Eid (born 13 June 1957) is a Norwegian orienteering competitor. Her achievements include winning an individual world championship gold medal in 1978, and a silver medal in the relay in 1979. Ivar Formo
Ivar Formo (24 June 1951 – 26 December 2006) was a Norwegian cross-country skier and orienteer who competed during the 1970s. Career He won four medals at the Winter Olympics. Formo also won two bronze medals at the FIS Nordic World Ski Championships in the 4 × 10 km relay (1974, 1978). Formo also competed in orienteering, winning a bronze medal in the relay at the 1974 world championships, where he also placed ninth in the individual contest. He represented the club SFK Lyn. He won a number of awards for his accomplishments within sports, notably the Holmenkollen medal in 1975 (shared with Gerhard Grimmer and his good friend and rival Oddvar Brå) and Egebergs Ærespris in 1973. In 1979 he was part of the Lyn Jukola orienteering relay winning team.
